AIBU?

Lorelai Gilmore is such a bitch! *SPOILERS*

On maternity leave. I may have binge watched 6 series of Gilmore Girls Blush (whilst also doing mindless prep for baby tasks, laundry, knitting, batch cooking etc, don't judge me!).

She is controlling and hypocritical as displays many of the characteristics of her parents who she claims to dislike so much, self centred, a show and treats men abominably! I find myself disliking her more and more with every episode (just hitting the bit where she cheats on Luke) Angry

I disliked Lorelai too. Spoilt and immature.

I liked GG despite her.

dylsmimi · 20/02/2017 13:50

Wait till you see the new 4 parter ! Afraid to say you won't like Rory either!
I'm the same and binge watching - although I have switched to 9s Classic 'charmed' Grin
Third time of watching I defjbitely agree lorelia is not as likeable as many of the other characters like lane etc

whifflesqueak · 20/02/2017 13:50

I don't think she's entirely a bitch.

I think she's just a fairly well drawn and realistic character with some very human flaws.

haven't watched GG for years.

DearMrDilkington · 20/02/2017 13:52

I prefer her to Rory!

Luke is definitely the best character.Wink

KatnissMellark · 20/02/2017 13:52

To be fair, in the originals Rory is not that likeable either! I suppose youth could somewhat excuse her indiscretions but if you were Dean's/Dean's wife's/Jess's Mum or friend you wouldn't be impressed!

I really like Logan though- reminds more of DH in his younger days (if only he was as rich!)

B1rdonawire · 20/02/2017 13:53

I used to love the whole programme. Then I had DD...and now when I watch it I really have no time for Lorelai at all, she just never puts anyone else first, and always expects other people to fix everything for her. Still watch it though, for Suki, Michel, Luke (of course) and Emily!

KatnissMellark · 20/02/2017 13:54

Maybe it's because I'm binge watching though, so see all of their flaws/indiscretions in very quick succession Confused

Her daughter isn't any better. Cheating on Dean and I hear she isn't any better in the 10 yrs later one.

I gave up after 2/3 seasons.

BaconMaker · 20/02/2017 13:55

Can't stand her either! Still watched GG though!

KatnissMellark why would Jess's mum hate Rory as I remember it Jess was the one who treated Rory badly? (Resisting temptation to go back and re-watch the early series)

KatnissMellark · 20/02/2017 13:56

Jess did treat Rory badly originally but then she went to see him and snogged him after she had a fight with Logan, but was still in love/with him.

I watched this when pregnant with my first so it's a while ago. But to be honest I remember being really annoyed by Rory too. And I hated Paris. Still liked the show for some reason though.

InfiniteSheldon · 20/02/2017 14:26

Can't read the thread as I don't want to read spoilers I'm only on series 3 and I'm stunned at how awful she is. Manipulative, controlling, narcissistic brat. I really feel for her poor mother.

toffeeboffin · 20/02/2017 14:26

I stopped watching because I cannot stand the kid Rory in it.

As if gorgeous Dean etc would be interested, she's such a brat!
Not keen on the mother either.

Love the grandma tho.

Jellybean83 · 20/02/2017 14:43

I've watched the full run of GG more than I care to admit, my opinion changes of them season by season. It always annoyed me how the whole town idolised Rory and brushed under the carpet her cheating then her affair, her arrest and community service she wasn't this perfect all American girl next door.

Lane also got a bit of a rough ride, she could have been a proper success story but no then made her pregnant the first time she had sex and basically turned her into her mum, everything she didn't want to be.

Lorelai should've ended up with Jason, personality wise (and socially I guess as he was from that upper crust world) they were equals.

MoonriseKingdom · 20/02/2017 16:31

I am watching this currently (on series 5) having missed it first time round. Love it but yes Lorelai behaves really badly at times. I really like the Grandma. For all her faults she actually seems quite willing to learn.

Luke is so lovely though. I also really like the lovely teacher from early on she didn't marry. In fact all the men Lorelai attracts are lovely with the exception of Rory's dad.

I just love all the incidental characters though.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 20/02/2017 16:51

The whole this is appalling.

How can you take it seriously when every character talks with the same cadence and rolls eyes?!

(DH loves it!)

Boulshired · 20/02/2017 16:59

It was flawed from the beginning, the very life she ran away from without looking back was the exact life she wanted (forced) for her daughter.

SomethingBorrowed · 20/02/2017 16:59

Sookie irritates me the most...
Still love the show though

amusedbush · 20/02/2017 17:06

I love the show but I agree that Lorelai is terrible. She's so self-centred, needy and spoiled. She's terrible to her mother, but then I don't have much time for Emily either. The stunt with inviting Christopher to the wedding was unforgivable.

Rory is AWFUL in the revival. Awful. A spoiled, selfish brat who does what she wants, gives no regard for anything but her own whims and throws a tantrum because nobody will just give her a job. She wanders from opportunity to opportunity without putting in any time or prep work and expects people to fall over themselves to have her on board. Arsehole!

user1471503992 · 20/02/2017 17:14

I love the show but disliked Lorelai from the start, then gradually began to hate Rory too, when she turned out to be incapable of cutting the apron strings at college. It's worth it for every other character though, especially Kirk! And obviously Luke. And Emily and Richard. It really makes me laugh and you get so overinvested in their lives that the show can pull off hugely detailed plot devices that really work.

(Spoiler alert)
Was anyone else shouting 'just have a bloody abortion' at the screen when Lane got pregnant? I know in America putting abortion on tv is frowned upon, but nobody mentions it at all, it's like it doesn't even exist.

New 4-parter was bizarre, so not the trajectory any of the characters should have had (except Paris)! I mean, Logan fucking Huntsberger, again? Wtf? He was a horrible posh boy and I hated his squinty little face from the moment he appeared. His dad was right about Rory's journalist ambitions though, do you think Paris would have let herself be treated as a PA?

user1471503992 · 20/02/2017 17:17

Yes, Amusedbush! She does no prep for any interviews and then messes up the only assignment she's given - it seemed out of character. Pre-college Rory would have made that lines piece the best thing the editor had ever read, and she'd never have turned up unprepared, look how angry she was with Richard for tricking her into doing the Yale interview unprepared?

I hate it. I don't understand what I'm supposed to like about it, at all!

amusedbush · 20/02/2017 17:21

user1471503992

Right?? I don't believe for a second that she worked that hard to wander into Conde Nast with no prep, stammer her way through a meeting and then fluff the only piece they'll give her.

user1471503992 · 20/02/2017 18:07

I did snigger at the 30-somethings club and how she thought she wasn't like them - she was!

I think she started to think she was all that after Chilton - see, it's the effect of the privilege and arrogance bred into people at private schools (soapbox) - she started to believe she could do anything without working hard and nobody else cottoned on to the fact that she had stopped working so hard and so they all validated her feeling of outrage when things didn't go to plan because they were used to the Rory who did work hard. The only people who'd really done well in the new series were Jess and Paris, and Paris wasn't happy. I was particularly disappointed that Lane and Zack had such humdrum lives.
