Wow. What a nasty, mean spirited petition. I won't be sharing.

Me neither. Awful.

Yeah, that bill is nasty.

Take only this:

A young girl who finds herself in a public changing-room with a naked adult male would be legally forced to call him a woman if he identifies as such.

I can't believe they're actually planning to force girls, or really, women of any age, to tolerate men in their changing rooms. Sad

TheProblemofSusan If you had read the article you would know it is not a petition but is a comprehensive overview of the wider implications of the Bill

Sex-segregated facilities designed for the protection of women and girls would become segregated by gender identity. Everyone, including children, would be legally bound to believe the gender identity of anyone else, child or adult. A young girl who finds herself in a public changing-room with a naked adult male would be legally forced to call him a woman if he identifies as such. She would no longer have any recourse to legal protection from any man entering her private spaces, the law would demand that she protect his “identity”

Please tell me this isn't true? What's to stop predatory males "self-identifying" as women and accessing safe spaces such as women's refuges, rape crisis centres etc?

*note: I'm not saying all makes are predatory, but the minority who are cause devastation. Are women really going to let their rights, and the rights of their daughters and granddaughters, be trampled all over by a small, but extremely vocal, minority?

I have no problem with people who have fully transitioned being able to share changing rooms etc, but is this saying that any male-bodied individual can declare themselves female with out any hormone treatment or surgery, and anyone who challenges that will be guilty of hate speech?

I really hope I've misunderstood this. If not the world has gone truly insane.

Absolutely not. Awful.

Folks, you realise that this "petition" is AGAINST the bill, right? That the bits you're quoting are examples of why the bill is a bad thing, not arguments in its favour?

Sorry I'm confused. Does signing the petition mean you are IN FAVOUR of all this? Or against it?

ThePants (Hi fellow Pants! [waves])

Yes I realise that, and I'll certainly be contacting my MP and urging them to oppose the bill if this is what it could lead to.

Somehow the world seems to be going backwards. I'm sure when I was a child (80s) it was mostly considered fine for girls to climb trees and boys to have dance lessons and no-one tried to persuade them they were the opposite sex.

I dread to think what damage it could have done if I had been pushed down the transition road because I was a bit of a tomboy. I'm now an adult woman who still has some traditionally male interests, and I'm very happy in the body I've got and with the life I've got.

I'm so glad I'm not a child/ teenager today, they must be so confused.

To enshrine gender identity in law would give any man legal status as a woman (or vice versa) based only on personal feelings, effectively establishing “gender identity” as the only legal distinction between men and women. “Gender identity” by definition, excludes and denies the existence of biological sex.

"Denies the existence if biological sex" This is terrifying. Pesky science eh? Getting in the way of what a few bolshy activists want, so they attempt to deny long established, proven science that doesn't suit their agenda.

Not only that, but they want us to deny it too. Do they really think we're that stupid? Or such meek little mice who are that easily intimidated that we just do whatever they tell us, regardless of scientific fact? Obviously they do.

What an insult.

The bill has only been read once so it's a long way off becoming law. It's so ridiculous that I can't believe it will get through the remaining stages....

I hope not anyway

. I don't really usually follow transgender etc issues too much as I find the discussions get so heated and aggressive but I'll keep an eye on this one.

I find this proposed law utterly terrifying. An adult male with a penis and testicles is a MAN. Regardless of whether he's naked, in a pinstripe suit or a ra-ra skirt. If he wants to call himself Linda, wear vintage dresses and be referred to as "she" I will respect that, I will neither wish nor advocate for any harm coming to him, I will hope he lives a life free from ridicule or discrimination, but I will not and cannot accept that he is a woman. Because he is not.

I'll be drafting a letter to my MP tomorrow.

Janey50 it is not a petition, it is an article that explores the implications of this Bill coming into legislation - it also makes reference to UN Childrens Rights - therefore if you oppose the Bill you would write to your MP

People are waking up to this too late. Women will lose all rights to privacy, the right to compete with their own sex in sport, the right to be represented as they will legally be represented by biological males. This is so harmful to women and girls.

Just imagine if we were proposing this in other areas, the right to define what you are. Trans black? Trans child? Trans tall?

DameDeDoubtance I agree, some people are totally unaware of the impacts of this Bill, I however have done everything I can to raise awareness and hopefully those people that are truly concerned will have taken action as I have and contacted their local MP to have their views represented

Here's a link to the actual petition against the Bill.

It poses the biggest threat to women and girls in our lifetimes.
