If they take you for granted and insult you simply because they feel like it

I'd give up on that one!

I've done it, after years of belittling, nasty comments and dreading what was going to be said next I made the decision to walk away. I now feel strangely liberated, I'm the younger sibling and it was expected that I'd just put up with it. I think you'll know if you've reached that point.

I've 'given up' on a number of my siblings (and they on me).

We didn't enrich each others lives, I hated being around them. We have our own families now and while i feel a duty towards parents i don't feel that same duty to siblings.

As soon as you want to, you owe your sibling nothing.

I'd give up now! No giving favours. Any insults, then inform them you don't need that in your life and goodbye.

Let us know how it goes.

For me, it was when I realised there was nothing in the relationship for me and it was all about her, what I could do for her and how she could get what she wanted.

I didn't bother to waste my breath on my revolting siblings. Just absented myself. The joy!

someone said to me once "life is too short", I replied "yes it is when you care for someone who doesnt care for you back"

when you realise thats the truth of it, then you give up

Gave up on my sibling as I realised I was being used.

It turned out she would turn to me when she wanted money, never pay it back and then she and her children would call me names and snear at me behind my back.

A lot of the replies to this are taking it as being a black and white situation. There are variables here. If the sibling is purely nasty of course yanbu to give up on them but these things aren't always as clear cut as that and there could be mental health issues (have been in my family although granted not with a sibling).
