To hand in my notice without a job to go to

Current job is part-time, term-time only, but I find it hugely stressful, and the leadership my team has is woeful. Just awful. The effects it's having on me, and my relationship (mainly due in part to my inability to handle stress) are potentially catastrophic. Whilst I am well-paid, and my earnings are welcome, we don't rely on my salary. Our son is in nursery whilst I work, so he would stop going, and we would save the fees.

So in theory, handing in my notice for a job that I hate and don't really need, is a no-brainer.

And yet, and yet....

We would have to tighten our belts. Me, in particular, who has an expensive hobby (horse) that may as well eat £20 notes.
I've only been in the job since September. My contract runs until June, so not really that long. I worry that it won't look good on my CV.

I am looking for other work, and do have applications submitted. But I am so fricking miserable in the meantime, I do wonder if it is worth it.

I would look for another job so they run concurrently. But if it's making you really unhappy then follow your heart.

I also think it is easier to find a job when in job, but agree with pp...if it makes you miserable and you're confident to find another job then...

I was in this situation and I quit. Zero regrets.

I always get a new job when I'm in a job. I think it's much easier to get a different job when you're still in employment. Even consider doing a job that isn't quite right for you but that would at least get you away from where you are now?

Keep looking - is s so much easier to jump when you are in position to move. You don't look quite so 'desperate' - get yourself agency work lined up. If none of that is viable just think in six-week chunks, half term, Easter Whitsun, summer - it soon whizzes past.

I packed in a job I hated, took me about 6 weeks to find another one, no regrets here 😊

Could you also save on horse by going DIY or grass livery?
I am a SAHM with a horse, money is tight but we manage. No luxury or matchy matchy but everyone is fed and clothed.

As others said, it's best to begin looking whilst still employed and you should be upping the ante. You should absolutely be looking as you shouldn't be stuck in a job which makes you miserable.

If you withdrew your child from nursery, could they get back in easily if you found alternative employment?

I wouldn't be happy tightening my belt whilst keeping a horse so I can see that that should be the first thing to go. The good news is, the meat on an average colt is worth £500. Every cloud and all that.

Could you hand your notice in and temp while you look for another job? Or do services, on your yard or on another yard?

Ahah SansComic, you don't send your horse to slaughter just because you have to sell it!
Do you know what a colt is?

A young male.

My parents had a couple of horses as I grew up. The best thing about horses is the taste.

Are you married? If not, and even if so, I wouldn't quit and take a big financial risk. Financial security is important.

You could cut corners at work while looking for something else, or use the holidays to recoup/job seek and work on your mental health - I have found that's really helped me addrss difficult work situations.

I have been in a job I have loved for several years. After a recent change in management, the writing was on the wall and I have been looking for a new job. I am now about to be made redundant...I am hoping that some of the work I have been doing will pay off and I will get something new soon. I have a big mortgage and am hugely stressed about not being able to find something new while still employed.

Maybe that's just me, but if financially I needed to work I wouldn't quit without having something else.

good luck - I know it is miserable.

This happened to me in the days before I was self-employed. The fact that you are looking for another job and are sending applications out will make your current job feel less stressful. If you can do some of the searching actually at your desk in current job then so much the better!

Thanks all for the useful feedback. I think you're right - I have to put on my big girl pants and suck it up for now. It's just bloody miserable in the meantime.

We get married this summer, so in the short term, financial security is important. The horse is on the cheapest of set-ups that I can find. I have thought about selling, but she's part of the family AND is my release valve so not an option!

If it is term time only, look for another job and hold out for dinner. You have Feb half term, Easter, may half term .... that's over 4 weeks off in the next few months.

Pinotwoman82 · 14/02/2017 07:55

If you can try and hold on, it's Feb half term now, then in 5 weeks it's Easter, then after that it's 5 weeks till may half term that should give you time to look for another job?

Thanks again. Unfortunately, the college I work at doesn't have half term, but I have decided to suck it up for now.
