It looks like one of those things that looks like a good idea but the reality of using it could be a pita. Is each compartment large enough to be useful, or will they need emptying constantly. How easy are the sections to remove and empty?

We once had an expensive touch lid bin, I hated it. It kinda created a vacuum and the bag was hard to pull out. The touch lid opened too slowly. It was so huge that the contents stunk in the summer.

We now have 3 bulk standard, swing lid, smaller plastic bins side by side. We don't even bother to put the lids on. Glass in one, recycle bin stuff in one, geneal waste in the other.

I saw a bin that opens when you walk up to it all by itself.

I feel when I own that bin, along with that little hoover that hoovers for you, I will officially be complete in life.

My DP will also be complete in his mission to own as much digital junk as possible I think. Someone gave him a mini drone for Christmas. (What on earth is the point of those tiny things?!)

My bins are just swing bins. I spit on them. (Not literally, don't want to be cleaning those things more than needed!)
They do their job though.

In my extensive experience of bins (I was a cleaner) the more expensive the bin the more crevices for smelly stuff to hide. As a result My bin was £6.99 from b&m bargains like the one attached. I have even taken off and discarded the lid as it means less faff and chance of spilling. It's so easy to clean. Bin lives in a kitchen cupboard so dog can't make a buffet out of the contents.

That Joseph Joseph bin also requires a rather expensive accessory pack of bin bags and filters to go with it. I suppose if you spent £200 on a bin you wouldn't want it to suffer the humiliation of supermarket bin liners would you?

But then again, correctly fitting bin liners might be worth the expense.

Our bin is from Ikea and similar to the picture and none of the bin liners sold in Ikea, any UK supermarket, M&S or any pound/discount/bargain shop are the correct size.

I had a very nice bin.

It looked nice. It opened with a smooth butterfly motion with a foot pedal. It was very big. This meant there was less time spent every time you put something in the bin, and it only ha to be emptied once every week. Result: bin admin = zero.

The bin stayed in the house after a relationship break down.

I miss that bin :-(

barbara I have those bins and the rolls of white bin liners from lidl fit the smaller ones fine. I use the bigger one for recycling so that doesn't need a liner.

YANBU - I desperately wanted the Joseph Joseph bin in question, but couldn't quite justify the spend (also the colour didn't match our kitchen!! )

After having to replace cheap bins every 6 months as they broke or ended up not holding the bin bags in etc etc I decided to go for a simplehuman one as a mid price compromise (cost about £60) and it was worth every penny.

It has an inbuilt spare bag holder so you don't have to fish around under the sink for a new bin bag. Now you do have to buy the specific bin bags by simplehuman which are a couple of pounds more than regular (Dunelm do them cheap), but they fit perfectly to avoid leakage/overflow. They also have a tab that pops out when you only have 5 left.

It's sturdy and looks a lot 'nicer' than other bins of you have it on show! They also do a version that has recycling separators etc like the JJ!

Thanks Nanny. I think what I might be doing wrong is that I have two of the larger bins and use one for recycling and one for non recycling. So maybe I'm not supposed to do it that way.

We have some Lidl pedal bin bags that are nearly big enough and are the cheapest option or if we're feeling flush, M&S have some that have fetching pictures of citrus fruit on them, but are slightly more expensive, as you would expect.

I've got the £200 Joseph Joseph Totem bin, and I think it's great. Normal bin bags fit fine. I don't have space for multiple bins, and my bin is visible (there's nowhere to tuck it away), and this bin is perfect. I paid less than £200 though - it was on special offer, followed by 10% off for joining the mailing list. It's a lot of money for a bin, but I think it was worth it.

Personally I can't stand any bin I have to touch with my hands as they always seem to be filthy (and don't get me started on bins inside cupboards). It has to be a pedal bin for me.

I bought a Simple Human butterfly pedal bin 10 years ago, a 20 litre capacity one in brushed stainless steel (this size seems to have been discontinued but the liners are still available) and it has been one of the best purchases I've ever made. It still looks like new, it's slimline and sits neatly at the end of the run of cupboards and has a silent soft-close action so never clangs shut.

I do buy the Simple Human liners as they fit perfectly and never split. I bought a job lot about 2 years ago from Simple Human online and I've probably still got another 2 years worth left!

They are considerably more expensive than when I bought mine but would spend the money if it fell to bits tomorrow. I've definitely had my money's worth.

I just bought a simplehuman bin and I love it. I love the smooth pedal action with no violent lid flipping. I love the soft close. I love the pocket for the liners that makes changing it easier. I love that it's not too big. I basically want to marry it.
