HAD two pairs of glasses and a new puppy....

Left my glasses in a place puppy could reach, he ate them.my stupid fault. Been wearing my second pair. Left them in a place I know puppy can't reach. Cat (who had been a bit stressed after puppy, but settling now) knocked them off high place, puppy ate them.

I can't see distance, so can't drive, would take me two hours to get to work tomorrow on public transport. Which doesn't fit with DS nursery hours. Only other way is to get a taxi (£25 each way)

Can borrow DPa glasses, as we have similar prescriptions, but pretty sure It wouldnt be legal to drive wearing them as they are not my prescription.

I have a laptop so can work from home, but had time off sick last week (genuine flue bug, hallucinating with fever etc).

What I want to do is wfh tomorrow, go to the local village opticians (I am due an eye test in 3 months so might as well get that done) and hopefully get some glasses ordered and expedited. And then do the taxi/long commute on public transport thing in the hopefully 3 days it will take to prepare my new glasses!

DP doesn't drive, I am also self employed (IT contractor) so reputation is key, please tell me I can take a guilt free day off working from home tomorrow, and my client isn't going to think I am flaky!

Im sorry to say this but in don't think you can do it without looking flaky. It's an exhausting explanation and if I'd hired you on day rate I've done that so in don't need to deal with employee stuff. This feels like employee stuff.

So on a human level your plan is totally sensible. But on a work level you may just have to suck the cost of a taxi up! Could dh take little one to nursery by public transport or have a day off.

I'm sorry - it must be a real pain though, especially if you're still under the weather

YANBU you would be putting yourself and others at risk to drive with the wrong prescription.

How long will it take to get new ones made up, can you wear contacts? I know when I used to the optician usually had some in stock but glasses usually take about a week to be made up.

Happy to get a taxi until my glasses come, but not going to drop a tonne of money on glasses that ,ignited need the prescription changing in a few months any way.

Will mean that DS goes to nursery and comes home in a taxi without a car seat though.. but uncomfortable with that...

Dp takes ds to nursery. You take yourself to work. Either public transport there or part bus/train and part taxi. Whilst at work call the opinions and arrange an appointment for replacement glasses.

Speak to your boss and explain you're fixing things.

Keep your glasses either on your face or in their case.

Do leaves for work at 6:30, But he can do pick ups (in a taxi!). good idea about car seats in taxis, not sure of ours is isofix only though.. or could be done with just a belt.

Don't go into the puppy stuff.. just say you need an emergency optomitrist how the jeff do you spell that appointment tomorrow and, sincere apologies, but you'll be working from home.
Hopefully that falls under the 'medical' heading so no one will ask any questions.

Definitely dont go into the puppy stuff- it does make you sound a bit chaotic/ flakey (sorry) and also if you're asking to WFH as your employer I'd be thinking "how much time will she be working and how much making sure the puppy doesn't eat everything else". Therefore if you do wfh you need to be visibly efficient and productive (ideally chuck a few calls in there).

Isofix car seats nearly always have a seatbelt option.

If your car seats are Isofix only that should be ok and actually easier! The should be new enough to have Isofix. All vehicles post-2007 have Isofix unless it's like a minibus or disabled vehicle. Or like those black cabs they have in London

My Cubex Sirona doesn't have a seatbelt option at all. So if that is the one you have then you'll need to make sure your Taxi has Isofix prior to booking x

Why do you need to take the whole day off? Tell your client your going to be a bit late, go to the opticianst then get a cab into work. It's a silly reason to take a whole day off of work.

I would go to work by whatever means you can.

I'm a supply teacher which is a similar sort of thing. People don't want to know about puppies and glasses, they just want to to be doing what they have paid you to do. That's what I miss the most about having a normal job I think.

If you are a contractor and have your own limited company, you should, in theory, be able to dictate your working days within reason, as long as you are fulfilling your contract (if your contract states a minimum number of days per contract rather than a maximum - big mistake if it does!).

You're not a permie, so shouldn't behave like one. If you are able to work from home occasionally then you should. And you shouldn't ask them this - you should be able to tell them that's what you're doing. By asking for time off or annual leave, you're putting yourself inside IR35 rules...

I ordered some emergency glasses from specs by post, they cost £15 and came in a couple of days. Would it be easier to do that than take the day for the optician and then book the optician for a convenient time? You could then keep the cheap pair as a spare.

What is your prescription? A lot of supermarkets do ready made glasses for the more standard prescriptions. Vision express have a one hour service in most of their stores if you can get to one of those? Just get the cheapest pair you can, as quickly as you can then reassess when you have more time!

If your lenses aren't broken or too badly scratched take them with you to the opticians: they may be able to put them into a new frame. Work from home today (it's not too flaky as long as you can get it sorted and actually get enough work done.) but get the glasses fixed. Otherwise as others have said: get to a 1 hour optician and at least get a pair for driving (simple prescription) even if you need to wait for a more complex one.
