'Oh, ha ha, remember when you ...'

Awwlookatmybabyspider Sat 11-Feb-17 15:10:58

Oh no YNBU. I fuckin hate all that.

OneWithTheForce Sat 11-Feb-17 15:11:18

Depends what you did? Need to know before I can reply <nosey> grin

VladmirsPoutine Sat 11-Feb-17 15:11:40

It depends, more context is needed. My friends and I can always laugh at our past misdemeanours but I know that there is no malice intended. On the other hand, if a so-called friend is bringing things up with the intention of humiliating you then that person is quite clearly not a friend, but you already know this...

Fluffyears Sat 11-Feb-17 15:11:48

Mother does this and it's not even funny stuff hmm

VodkaJelly Sat 11-Feb-17 15:12:03

My dad does this, especially in front of my friends. I am 44, I don't think they really care about the time I cut my own hair when I was 6.

I roll my eyes so much I think they are starting to get stuck.

I've done lots of stupid stuff in my youth that I'd rather forget :D

TheWitTank Sat 11-Feb-17 15:12:34

God yes, I bloody hate that. YANBU.

The80sweregreat Sat 11-Feb-17 15:12:58

I hate it too. People who do this often hate it when you remind them of things they did.. Might shut them up!

justlikekatycarr Sat 11-Feb-17 15:13:13

Nothing too remarkable. Just generally being a dickhead smile

Magzmarsh Sat 11-Feb-17 15:13:50

I've got 3 friends I've known my entire life, none of us would do this to each other, it's really bad form.

AnyFucker Sat 11-Feb-17 15:15:01

I hate family get together for just this reason. I did a lot of stupid stuff in my youth. I don't need to be constantly reminded of it.

brasty Sat 11-Feb-17 15:16:14

Friends and I do this to each other, but not about anything that is humiliating. Just tell them seriously that you don't like it. If they are genuine friends, they should stop doing it.

BonnyScotland Sat 11-Feb-17 15:17:51

I despise this too.... friends don't do this ...

justlikekatycarr Sat 11-Feb-17 15:18:05

It's things like:

'I might upgrade my phone next month.'
'Oh LOL remember when you broke your phone when you were 17?'

'I might be able to come, but the new bed is being delivered, so ...'
'Oh LOL remember at uni when you spilled red wine on your bed?'

Like I say really nothing remotely remarkable. It's just a bit confused

puglife15 Sat 11-Feb-17 15:18:38

If it's hilarious, surely it's funny to be reminded? Don't take yourself so seriously. It's one of my favourite things when my old friends and I take the piss out of ourselves and each other for the clothes we wore and funny nights out.

puglife15 Sat 11-Feb-17 15:19:25

Xpost - OK that sounds dull as fuck, to be fair.

justlikekatycarr Sat 11-Feb-17 15:20:41

Yeah, that's why I used inverted commas but in any case, what's hilarious to one person can be quite painful for another.

Fluffy24 Sat 11-Feb-17 15:21:15

Oh god my DSis does this only it's 'remember when you were 6 and you wet your pants'. And it's never an isolated one, she then goes on to recount all the 'funny' stories about what happened to me before she was even born!

FloorHugger Sat 11-Feb-17 15:35:44

grin puglife

I hate this too. The first time my now-DH met my so-called best friend she said 'Iam so glad you finally found someone. Remember when you were so desperate to get married you would have had anyone?'

(For the record, I remember no such thing.)

I also hate family get togethers.... my DM has form for getting drunk then taking the piss out of me for this or that. - we have an uneasy relationship.

I might start reminding her of things she did - when she is really drunk she gets all maudlin and cries and apologises for how she was when I was a child (violent mostly).

A good friend will bring up funny stuff you got through together perhaps. You can laugh together to remember.

Horrible though when people bring up stuff which 1) wasn't funny for you, just embarrassing, and 2) didn't even bloody happen! It just gets embellished with more '' hillarious '' fictional each time it's told hmm

Mother - looking at you!

Rainydayspending Sat 11-Feb-17 15:42:26

Tilt head. Ask them if they're OK. You've noticed they're rather stuck in the past and you're worried about them.

shovetheholly Sat 11-Feb-17 15:47:12

Burst into tears and start loudly saying "Why would you bring that up? Why, why, WHY?" while banging the table. When you have the attention of the entire place, storm off to the loos.

It won't happen again.

Alternatively, you could just explain quietly and calmly to your friend that you find some of these things bad to remember, and that sometimes the past is best left in the past.

SharkBastard Sat 11-Feb-17 15:51:20

YANBU I fucking hate it!!!

My family do it all the time, I just tell them to change the record and do something fun or interesting for themselves so I'm not their 'story' anymore

Maverickismywingman Sat 11-Feb-17 15:55:41

Happens with me too, except my parents think it's hilarious.

How do you shut people down when they come up with rubbish like that?
