AIBU?

Ive accidentally hit on a work colleague. I need to change jobs now don't I?

Ive been getting on with a young man at my workplace. Just general chit chat. I thought he was gay. 100% thought he was gay. Yesterday he told me he was finding it hard to meet someone. To which I replied 'you're a really handsome man. You will easily meet someone'. I told him he should take the plunge and ask someone on a date. Wear the lovely shirt he had on Monday as it really suited him. No one would say no because he's a really handsome man with a great personality'. I said all this very enthusiastically! 😁

He was smiling like a Cheshire Cat.

Then someone came to me and said do you fancy 'Daniel' (he'd obviously repeated my comment). I was like oh no I'm just saying he's a handsome fella and should get himself out there and not to worry about being single. He will meet a lovely man, just needs to get himself out there. Visit a few bars.

The mutual colleague then informed me that 'Daniel' is in fact completely heterosexual even though a small number of people mistake him for being gay.😳

Daniel is now visibly nervous in my presence and looks pretty scared to be honest even though he is still being nice and chatting to me.

When shall I hand my notice in?

Sorry OP but this has really made me laugh. Your OTT enthusiasm will surely make him realise you don't fancy him but are just trying to boost his confidence.... hopefully Grin

Thanks for starting my day with a smile OP! He'll get over it. And there's absolutely nowt wrong with being nice!

I'll regularly tap someone on the shoulder on the train/bus/street to let them know I like their shirt/coat/dress/earrings... some like it some don't. But you can guarantee that when anyone is a bit down it's nice to have something nice to look back on.

Well done you!

Hes several years younger than me so I'm hoping he doesn't take it the wrong way!!!

But he's really nervous with me.

All be forgotten soon enough.

Or get drunk at the next after-work Friday drinks and sit on his lap.

Honestly, OP, nobody with a functioning braincell would take reassurances that 'you're a handsome man with a great personality' and injunctions to 'wear that lovely shirt you had on on Monday' as he hits 'a few bars' as a sexual pass. Grin It codes as 'annoyingly Mumsy and comically over-involved for a colleague'. I would be very surprised if this kid thinks you were coming on to him.

On the other hand, your Gaydar is clearly out of whack. Also, are you saying you wouldn't have come over all Mumsy and Agony-Aunt-ish if you knew he was straight?

Are you single? Do you fancy him? If so, I reckon you're in WinkGrin

Just say jokingly don't worry I'm not going to jump your bones in fact I thought you were gay!

Sounded like his mum? I hope so!!! 😳

My social awkwardness has hit new heights.
I can't believe I told him he was really handsome.

He is very handsome though 😜

Too young for me but no harm in a little look. Now I know he's not gay. Can't believe he's not gay though. He gets his eyebrows plucked every week, has a man bag he carries in his arms, brogues, perfectly ironed clothes.

Then again my best friend is gay and is as masculine as they come. So I'm being stereotypical now

Pat him on the head - he'll definitely know you don't fancy him then.
He'll also think you're very odd, and make sure you don't pat him hard or he'll feel obliged to start a thread on here complaining that he's been beaten up by a colleague after he didn't respond to her sexual advances Grin

Don't worry, it could be worse. You could be showing your boss the video you took of a mildly-amusing 'You've been framed' moment you happened to capture on camera, when he unexpectedly scrolls right and sees a photo of you wearing nothing but perfume.

fortified I don't think I'd ever be able to look my boss in the eye if I did that!!!! I hope that's not from experience!!! 😂

Ha I love that first response, you did sound VERY mum like.

My gaydar is crap too, a few weeks ago, when told the sorry tale of a long term relationship breakdown I asked the colleague if his boyfriend kept the dog when they split up. Apparently not, his girlfriend did...

A man bag that he carries in his arms? What on earth is that?

The80sweregreat · 08/02/2017 12:29

I would just laugh it off, you sound nice, he has a bit of a boost and may now put his best clobber on at the weekend and go and find a new partner.
WE all like to hear positive things about ourselves now and again.

I was wondering too - does it contain a small dog?

Agreed! If it helps, you could make a few comments about how much you like an older man to set him at ease....!!!

Was it DS? (He's 18, and everyone, gay men included, assumes he's gay. He had to come out to us as straight...)
