I got the following text:

HMRC has completed your tax review, £262 is outstanding to be paid back to you, Please use secure link to process your refund.

AIBU to be suspicious?

Don't they just pay extra with your next pay date?

Thanks

Sorry HMRC!

Inertia Sat 04-Feb-17 12:26:13

They send a cheque for the refund, in my experience. Sounds like a scam to me.

gamerchick Sat 04-Feb-17 12:26:18

Its a scam, they don't email you.

TheNiffler Sat 04-Feb-17 12:26:26

Yes.

Offler Sat 04-Feb-17 12:26:40

Definite scam, they would never text.

gamerchick Sat 04-Feb-17 12:27:17

In fact any emails saying you're due money from somewhere and include a link should be treated as scams.

EyesOfBlue Sat 04-Feb-17 12:27:20

I haven't clicked on the link they sent but I would soooo love the £262 right now! sad

elodie2000 Sat 04-Feb-17 12:27:31

Scam.

Iamastonished Sat 04-Feb-17 12:27:34

Yes, it's a scam. They always send mail through the post.

gamerchick Sat 04-Feb-17 12:27:41

Or texts.

I have recently had a tax refund
They sent a letter giving me the details and I was able to then complete an on line application and received the monies direct into my bank account
HMRC do not send email re refunds....always has to be letter communication first step

LIZS Sat 04-Feb-17 12:29:24

They will always write and send a cheque. Not email or text.

Foldedtshirt Sat 04-Feb-17 12:29:27

It's a scam. If you hover over the email address you'll see its from a randomised email address.
Here's an exciting email I got, and the source hmm

Blobby10 Sat 04-Feb-17 12:29:42

Definitely a scam - in my experience HMRC NEVER refund any tax sad

DonkeysDontRideBicycles Sat 04-Feb-17 12:29:49

DC had a scam text purporting to be frDVLA

gggrrrargh Sat 04-Feb-17 12:30:41

its the most amazing moment when you get a tax rebate isn't it! yep definitely not done by email

aurorie11 Sat 04-Feb-17 12:31:07

Have you submitted a self assessment return? If not, a scam. If you have, do you have a personal tax account?
If so, go to direct.gov.uk don't follow a link from a text and go to the taxes information and log in and there should be a secure message.

Vango Sat 04-Feb-17 12:31:11

Look at the full email address. It's probably a series of numbers ending shaw.ca. HMRC never email about amounts owed or due. Don't click on any links. HMRC ask you to forward the email, in its entirety, to an address you can find on their website. There are loads of scam emails being sent out right now.

JassyRadlett Sat 04-Feb-17 12:31:32

HMRC do email if you're signed up for it - but they never put a weblink in their emails. They instead tell you to log into your account to read the message.

augustusglupe Sat 04-Feb-17 12:31:52

I never use a link to from any emails I get. I always come off and then go to the proper site. I had a PayPal one the other day!! Definitely a scam OP

DonkeysDontRideBicycles Sat 04-Feb-17 12:32:06

Oops - supposedly DVLA offering a refund, which was bogus.
Don't click on any links!

somewheresomehow Sat 04-Feb-17 12:32:06

Its a scam to get hold of your bank details. I had one and an email stating I was due a tv license refund
I forward them to the 'phishing address'
