It's become hun-tastic *

"Well, that's what men are like! I don't know why you can't just get right back to cooking and cleaning immediately after giving birth - it's what I did!"

"I would never leave my child alone, even for two minutes, until they were at least 16. Better safe than sorry!"

"She's a bitch" "Slapper"

"I don't care if he does have SN. Hit him back! That'll teach him!"

  • not actual quotes

I used to come her for intelligent and witty conversation. It was fun, it was invigorating. It made me think and it made me smile.

But right now, my local town facebook page, where most posters find it hard to string more than three words together, seems fairly erudite in comparison.

    What's happened?! :(

I don't blame the paper. I'm pointing at PB. THAT was the watershed. Ho hum.

Soupy I cannot tell you how many times I've had to remake your flapjack because the first batch doesn't make it into the oven Blush

I'm a little lost, you've made up quotes to demonstrate a dislike of posters you feel were attracted in by daily mail links?

I'm relatively new so can only say I see a whole spectrum of opinions, which is for me what makes it interesting.

Come on OP, be the change you want to see on an anonymous chat forum on the internet

Aibu, Penis Beaker, Jeffrey, Fail.

It's all going a bit pear shaped, I agree.

I rely on you for that Soup!

I think it's got worse lately Donkey. Or possibly the balance has tipped? I don't know but it feels like there is a huge wave of righteous judgy not RTFT shite.

Or perhaps I just should have gone to bed an hour ago with a cup of cocoa and a good book.

I came to read the thread, soupdragon's flapjack recipe was mentioned, and now I'm on the Tesco website booking a food delivery for tomorrow purely to get the ingredients for a batch.

So yeah. Daily Fail. Whatevs.

Can't tell the difference tbh, the majority on MN have always seemed infuriating/odd/snobbish/irritating with a few that seem mind boggingly clued up, a few that are funny, some witty. Kind of like the general population really, which given the number of users on MN is hardly surprising.

I don't understand what any of that has to do with the Daily Mail?

I've been on MN for 6 years and there have always been comments like that.

And the Daily Mail (at least during the time I've been here) has always been the most widely read/linked to/talked about newspaper on Mumsnet.

I think it has far more to do with the ease of name changing than anything else.

If people weren't allowed to NC (and I understand why they are), I truly believe some people wouldn't post half the shit they do, if they were forced to do it in a name everyone here would 'know them' by.

It's too easy to bitch plop and then slip back into a 'nicey nicey' name that people may know and like.

I have noticed a shift lately though from sarcastic but no nonsense replies to outright nasty replies. Not from any one specific poster, simply as a trend. MN has always been a place for plain talking and not sugarcoating the truth but I've seen a few posts lately where a line has been crossed into being mean for the sake of it and offering nothing constructive to the thread. Old style MN might have been "well yes, you were stupid to but it's done now, here is some advice for the future" and new style seems to be "you were a total.idiot, what the hell did you expect would happen!? No one to blame but yourself. I hope your next shit is a hedgehog you vile specimen of humanity". Or words to that effect.

Have also noticed a massive influx of the professionally offended and the judgey.

I agree with Worra.

I think MN has been ruined by some of the posters on here and the stuff they choose to post about.

I like the name changing aspect of MN and it's useful for people who want to post something sensitive that they don't want associated with their usual username. I think though that they should do away with the 'user776581919' shit and insert some sort of anti-sockpuppet programme that stops you name changing on a thread you've already posted on so that it defaults to whichever username you've used on that thread previously.

Prompto you'll not be disappointed by the flapjacks. Obvs you'll put on oodles of weight or have to run like 70 thousand miles to burn off but who cares. #oink

I swore I would never be one of those posters who bemoaned that MN had changed and it was all so much better way back when BUT just lately it seems to have slipped into a parallel universe.

When a simple thread in S&B asking about a coat can garner posters haranguing the OP because of the wearer of said coat and stating that there must be no mention of a particular name otherwise they are duty bound to dictate to the OP and other posters what they must think and do things really have gone beyond the pale.

Report
JigglyTuff · 03/02/2017 23:34

Yes, that's exactly what it is Prompto. It's unkind and judgemental and full of fuckinghandmaidens.

And people have always been able to namechange but maybe that only works on small sites. On massive ones like MN is now, maybe it's not such a great idea.

I don't like it much

I agree with worra and think that the name changing button is overused especially when the OP changes her feckin name on the same thread. Ok so I don't like a lot of things on here so I just hide the thread and look at another. There's no need to be an arsehole to other folks either, my mantra is if you wouldn't say it in rl stfu.

Did someone say flapjacks?
Recipe please????

Oh and the fact the daily mail is easily the most read news media on mumsnet yet also the most complained about is hilarious.

I agree that the ease of namechanging has a lot to do with people being goady fuckers. People notice it more now simply because there are more users.

Report
WorraLiberty · 03/02/2017 23:47

I also think the user18843939939 type posters make us think there are more wankers here then there actually is.

For example if one user18843939939 says something nasty on one thread, then hops around saying nasty things on lots of other threads, I tend to assume the place has been invaded by nasty user number names.

When in reality it's probably the same person but who's going to remember all those numbers?

If they were called JoeBloggs, I'd remember instantly that I'd just seen them being a wanker on a couple of threads and dismiss them.
