We bought a house 4 months ago from a couple who were getting divorced – I'll call them Mr and Mrs X. We never saw her and she reportedly moved out weeks before we moved in.

When we moved in we found one of the bedrooms had a heavy duty bolt on the inside of the door. There was a nasty coaster in the kitchen which 'humorously' depicted a terrified woman being silenced.

Since then, we have received lots of post for Mr and Mrs X. He has been round twice to pick up his post (and offered to take hers and pass it on), and then said he had redirected his post. Hers continues to pile up. When we received her supply of contact lenses I called the estate agent and asked her to mention this to Mrs X. A couple of days later a young woman came by to pick up her post. I should have asked for ID, but didn't – just handed it over. The post continues to arrive – bank statements, what feels like a new bank card, post marked 'official', 'confidential', 'not a circular', etc.

Have I been watching too many murder mysteries? AIBU to suspect she's been done away with?

Can you check if she's on Facebook or LinkedIn? And message her?

Sounds odd that she's not redirected her mail after over 4 months

Seriously though, I do think it is unlikely she's been done away with although the post is odd.

We have lived here for 22 months and still get their post!! Specs savers, banks, college info, holiday brochures, Xmas cards from abroad, mind boggles. . .

What would be the point of it on the inside? I'm intrigued. They didn't have a teenager?

It would be in the inside to keep someone out and create a safe room.

Maybe she is just trying to avoid certain post. We have been here 3 years and we still get post from the previous people.

Including parking fines, and also something to do with their business. We now get baliffs rounds on a roughly 2 monthly basis

My parents have a bolt on the inside of their bedroom. It's simply because they like the window open and the the door rattles constantly, even with a tiny amount of wind. The bolt just holds the door still.
People we bought the house from didn't redirect anything. We still occasionally get stuff 8 years later.

My parents had lock on inside of bedroom door in case my dsis and i came into their rokm whilst they were busy. Suggest put not known at address on letters etc and repost. Im now binning the previous owners post which is now just a random junk mail.

Yes to newly dug flower beds! And I've just remembered that when we first saw the house many months ago, Mr X told my dh that there was a cellar with stairs down. When our surveyor wanted to look at it, he said there was only a small space under the house and the access to it was nailed down! Do you think I have too much time on my hands?

I do think you have too much time on your hands, yes.

Nevertheless, that time is probably best spent looking for that cellar! Ask neighbours whether they have s cellar if their house is the same as yours.

We've lived in our house for 5 years. This week we got a letter from the DVLA asking the previous owner to renew his driving licence. Please take a good look in the cellar and have a poke about in the flower bed. Though I think it's Gil Grissom you need right now.

Cellars are perfect storage spaces. Why would you nail it shut??

Stop keeping any post for anyone and return it all to sender. You may think it's polite, etc to pass it on, but it really just causes you aggro. If someone can't be bothered to set up mail forwarding don't fall into the trap of doing it for them.

If there's a cellar under your house, why haven't you tried to locate it and open it up?

If the vendor has done her in or she's run off, the sale to you may be fraudulent if she was a co-owner.
