AIBU?

To live most of my life in my own head

Today, in between playing with the toddler and doing all the boring house shit that comes with being a SAHP, I've spent maybe 80% of my time fantasising about a life in which I'm kidnapped by a hot 19th century highwayman. Turns out I'm an amazing sword fighter even in a corset and flowing dress.

Does anyone else make up these complex imaginary scenarios or am I going insane?! AIBU to spend most of my time in my own daydreams and not care?

I'm just the same, have been for as far back as I can remember

Sometimes I worry my dream world is making me miss out on life happening around me. But my daydreams also provide a wonderful escape from all the times of stress and trauma that have happened, so I think they've kept me sane aswell

Same here. Are either of you also introverts by any chance? Goes hand in hand for me in my life.

Totally and utterly the same. My head is a fabulous place to live in. The real world not so much. I just get pissed off when I'm forced to come out.

Yeah def an introvert! Which is interesting when you have a very extroverted, affectionate 2 year old to look after.

I'm an introvert and this is absolutely me.

Sometimes. I retreat into deaydreams more often when my normal life is mundane. Right now, I have a lot going on but when life is tedious, or when I'm very stressed, my inner fantasy life had provided me with an escape. I have several brilliant scenarios that I revisit time and again. Some can take several days to fully play out. I think it's called maladjusted daydreaming if it's excessive. Not sure I care though - it's helped me cope with things I think would have broken me otherwise.

But look outside and how nasty it all is! Much better in here...

Sword fighting in a corset? Sounds fun, can I join in? What sort of shoes though? I'm only sword fighting if I can wear Laboutins.

I'm another one who is guilty of this.

Yep. In fact it's an excellent coping mechanism for me and massively reduces anxiety. The converse is that it's harder to imagine when I'm anxious so I get more and more anxious..!

When I was a little girl I had two or three entire worlds to be in and I really miss how easy it was to slip away then.

And now it's often, though not always, based on a fictional world and is like having my own little permanent fanfic in my head.

... I really should talk to my counsellor about this...

I'm always daydreaming. Right now I've got a 'what happened next' scenario to a TV programme I used to watch that I often daydream about. I'm definitely an introvert.

I'm an introvert at heart, though people sometimes take me for an extrovert because in the right company I can be very at ease and chatty and funny. It's not often I feel at ease in other people's company though

Barely have time for my non imaginary life Grin

Constantly. It mainly involves me and Kit Harington! I always make up a story in my head before bed.

I'm the same. As a child, the main thing any teacher ever said to or about me was that I'm a dreamer.

I was going to ask if you're an introvert but that question has already been asked and answered!

You're a totally normal introvert OP Grin

On a related note, I'm currently a little bit obsessed with Jack and Phryne in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I'm half way through season two and REALLY NEED THEM TO GET PROPERLY TOGETHER. So ways in which that can happen are a recurring theme atm.

Also I personally would very much like to bang Jack but that's not quite the same sort of day dream

Weirdly I'm not very introverted. I'm not a total extrovert either, definitely somewhere in the middle - sometimes I need people and sometimes they all need to HO AWAY.

Report
TheProblemOfSusan · 01/02/2017 18:52

Yes Bigby! I think I'm just a total narrative-slut, tbh. I need some characters and a plot and I'm away with the fairies, either in head or on page.
