AIBU?

to think we could all do something positive - and ask UK govt to take in a lot more Syrian refugees?

I get the rage. The fear. But behind all that it is hard to somehow focus on the story of all the Syrian refugees. On the people behind the headlines.
Couldn't we channel some of this vast emotion into campaignjng to take in far more refugees from Syria. To balance the gates being shut by Trump?

I know all the arguments that "we don't have space" etc etc but it is actually quite hard to believe that is really the case when many wealthy people have second, even third, homes.....

I can't start a petition, but maybe someone could?

Great idea. I wish this govt would do more to help.

Are you suggesting that the govt should compulsory purchase second homes?

Report
findmeunafraid · 31/01/2017 23:25

Not compulsory purchase them no.
But if i had a second home, or even a spare room in my home, I would feel awful knowing there were refugees out there with nothing....

just saying, no point sitting here wringing our hands about Trump if we as a nation, as individuals, don't think what we can do.

I agree. Even my df, who's as daily mail as they come, thinks we should accept all Syrian children.

Why not?

Why can't you start a petition, otherwise aren't you just hand wringing as well?

Yes, we can't just sit in our homes getting angry at trump and not do everything t we can to help them.
And I am talking to myself as much as everyone else! I am trying to formulate a plan in my head of the most effective uses of my skills/time (minimal cash)

Right so you can't start a petition, so you want someone else to do it?

You don't have the room to take in refugees, so you want someone else to do it?

What exactly can you as an individual do, apart from asking other people to do things?

because I cant. Not wont, can't. Is that so hard to comprehend?

You haven't explained why you can't, so yes it is a bit hard to comprehend Confused

I don't think it involves much time to start a petition, so do it if you feel that strongly about it.

You don't have to be a genius to figure it out Smile

But if you want to turn this thread jnto s personal attack on me instead of one about the plight of refugees then go ahead. Bet you feel great about yourself.

Ffs. It's not time that is the issue. I would have thought that was obvious.

Well you could organize food collections or clothes - you could raise money for medicines or bedding - you could contact an organization and ask why you could do?

Why can't you?

WorraLiberty · 31/01/2017 23:39

Oh for fuck sake why are you talking in riddles?

Please can you just answer a simple question?

Why can't you start a petition? Confused

It's an absolutely genuine question.

I'm sure people who have second homes etc would have no desire to hand over their house to refugees to live in free of charge with no references etc. (Not speaking from any particular side here as I don't even own one home Grin)

Improbably can and I probably will astro. But this thread is not about me.
Go hang your heads in shame if you are going to use it to attack me instead of having a sensible discussion.

I have PTSD and am going g through all sorts of shit and was coming from a place of compassion. When I started the thread. But you lot are twisting it into a personal attack/ inquisition. Niiiiiiiice.

because I cannot put my name to it. I have a violent ex. and it would not be safe to.
But ffs back off me and either debate about the main point or go attack someone else!

We are already struggling for space and homes for the people who already live here and you want to add more people. How about helping the homeless people who already live here and are out there with nothing or can't you help them either but would gladly stand back and watch other people help while you come up with ideas of how to help.

Lots of refugee children have just been granted asylum in the UK in the last 6 months.

You seem to feel we should all be doing something to help- why don't you offer to house one of the children?
They could share a room with your DC maybe, OP.

Right so you can't do anything about it but you expect people to give up their property instead? Wow. Okay then.

lokisglowstickofdestiny1 · 31/01/2017 23:43

No one's attacking you personally! In your OP you said "I can't start a petition, maybe someone could". Others have reasonably asked you why you can't start a petition, but you don't seem to be able to give an answer.

WorraLiberty · 31/01/2017 23:44

And we were supposed to guess that? Confused

There's no need to be so touchy OP

No-one is personally attacking you.

Compassion is a wonderful thing in this kind of situation. But ultimately pointless if you aren't in a position to actually do something. Like someone upthread said, if it genuinely bothers you, take one or more of the children into YOUR home
