Theresa May is far too calculated and careful to just blurt out an invitation for such an important occassion.

On a more comedic level I'd love to see the makers of the Windsors do a "special" where Alec Baldwin plays Trump & they create a mash up of a state visit. I imagine it being hilarious.

State visits are hosted by HMQ at the request of her Government and it's been like that for yonks.

Communications between the Palace and No10 are never made public.

Queenie has no say in who she meets or doesn't meet and does as she's told. That's the way our monarchy works. Most people think that's the right way and even that the Royals should be done away with.

Shame, because I think left to their own device, Queenie and Phil the Greek would probably tell Trump where to get off. Charles certainly would on environmental grounds.

I think it was a massive error of judgement on the part of Theresa.

She thought she had the trump thing in the bag, and he shafted her only hours after she left the little get together they had.

He'll shaft her again before too long, probably if and when she ever makes any sort of demand from him, he will think he's too powerful to do anything he doesn't want to do.

I think she was doing that British thing of "oh you must pop over some time" and Trump, with his blunt American ways, took it at face value.

He'll probably pop over unexpectedly without bringing a bottle of wine and the whole of the UK will have to pretend they were just on their way out.

This is putting pieces of the puzzle together & I might not be getting it right but there is a committee with representatives from the govt, Buckingham Palace & civil servants etc which decides on State Visits. He won't be able to come for ages on a State visit, the Queen's diary is fixed every 6 months or so from what I understand, the next time she's likely to have a gap is in the autumn after she comes back from Balmoral in mid-October.

A more careful politician would have at least waited a few weeks into the Presidency to see what exactly he was going do before rushing over there to lick his arse. It's not like there weren't warning signs.

Private eye said they'd pencilled him in for October 2018. I suspect the PM has gone it alone with this one and bought it forward.

The queen will play ball albeit frostily and keep her gloves on. She will however unleash her secret weapon. The Duke of Edinburgh has been honing his diplomatic gaffs for the last 60 years. Now is the time, now is his moment. He can be as offensive as he likes to Trump and the nation will throw him a parade. Kate will probably get diplomatically pregnant so she can avoid him and Charles and Cams can both have a bad back. Leaving Princess Anne to deal with Trump's wandering hands as only a woman who has spent her life in the horsey set can...........

When I said I wasn't sure he should get a state visit so soon, it was suggested that maybe the Queen asked to get it out of the way quickly before he does anything even more controversial and makes a state visit even more awkward than it already will be.
