Theresa May - opinions

So over the weekend so so many decent people spoke out about Trump and the Travel Ban from countries with largely Muslim populations (though not those where he has business deals or hotels)..... I'm furious with the actions of the UK PM who instead of standing firm for values and morals seems to be cosying up to this monster and trying to get trade deals going..... is it me or does anyone else think if the UK had remained in the EU - we'd now have David Cameron joining the voices of the sane to condemn Trump. Is this what the UK has now become...... I've seen tweets of all the anti Trump visit marches and am so proud of those people getting out to have their voices heard...... and the online petition..... again British people standing up like they have done so many times before. Does anyone else think also that Theresa May is leading this country down the wrong path and that in this instance regardless of what you think about Brexit it would be better for us to be in the EU? Didn't Cameron warn of this also?

Totally agree, she's coming across as very weak and unable to criticise him whatsoever, its embarrassing

She is a weak, appeasing embarrassment.

I think the subtext in your post is a major driving factor in Trump's rise to power.

YABU for expecting any politicians to stand up for values or morals unless it saves them money. She does seem rather spineless though.

yes she appears weak, indecisive and needy of him/their trade deal - not great

Unelected, unappealing, underwhelming, unelectable. Best of a (very) bad bunch is all she can cling to...

I'm deeply, deeply ashamed of our government. I think history will judge us for failing to stand up to Trump.

She's embarrassing and she's going to end up with the same reputation as Chamberlain. Sucking up to a despot.

One can see the brexit vote as a choice between aligning with the US or with Europe. May et al (opportunistic politicians that wave with public opinion) backed the wrong horse, thinking that Hillary or Bernie would win.

And now they can't back down without losing face and power. Peace in our time.

"regardless of what you think about Brexit it would be better for us to be in the EU?"

Good luck with that one.

UK has done extremely well out of the Pax Americans for a couple of decades now. And the decision to engage and seek to influence strikes me as the only pragmatic option.

Doobigetta · 30/01/2017 20:26

Agree. We should be standing up for our values alongside the rest of Europe. It's shameful that we're in this position. This is the reality of Brexit as anyone with half a fucking ounce of perceptiveness knew before the fucking referendum.

I like Theresa May, I think she secretly despises trump and his ways but let's face it, we do need that trade deal with America, she's doing what she needs to do for the future of our country & got a minefield of a job to get through. She can't win either way.

I like her all the more for her moments of weakness, sorry, not sure what people wanted instead. Gove? Johnson? FFS, No. She isn't high on charisma & she's walking a tight line having to try to be pragmatic & hope to be friends with whoever is in White House next month. She's a better technocrat than a leader, but I'll take a flawed thinker who doesn't get the spin perfect over the decisive zealots we had on offer, instead.

In my preferred universe there's an election next month & the Lib Dems sweep to power. Since that's not on offer, we could do so much worse than May.

I think DavCam would have been very slightly more vocal re: Trump. But only very slightly! They represent the same party after all. I think situations like this are one reason why he left.

Well, she isn't my Prime Minister so I probably can't say much but I think she's a spineless joke. Theresa the appeaser indeed. That said I am now a US citizen and was formerly a Russian citizen (British prior to that) so heads of state who the rest of the world consider unpopular seem the norm. Trump really takes the biscuit though.

Op how do you feel about her NATO coup - getting Trump to admit he is 100% behind Nato - pretty huge issue is an understatement right now?

With Trump being the man he is - do you think she will get further with him by standing him down or by being diplomatic.

After her Nato assurances...which I am sure many smaller EU countries are on their knees in gratitude for...I would say the latter.

but I think she's a spineless joke Hmm so perhaps you dont set much store by Nato then. Oh well. Confused

She is and always has been a politician who is almost entirely pragmatic as opposed to principled. Everything she does is calculated, with a large emphasis placed on how she thinks it will be portrayed in the press. I actually think that a healthy level of pragmatism is a good thing in a politician but Theresa May is far too much that way inclined. Sometimes you have to make a stand based on what you believe and what is right and I think that she's failed miserably on this occasion.

Oh another one who cares nothing for NATO. Ok. Hmm

If your going to accuse her of sucking up to despots why are you not mentioning the man who is actually beating, killing, disapearing people - ie Erdogan???

Cameron! He called the referendum to appease his own party and then ducked out when it was obvious the going after the result would be rough.

I very much doubt he'd have denounced Trump.

Faced with looming EU tariffs, companies and jobs moving etc it's hard for any UK PM to alienate a massive trading country.

Report
yeOldeTrout · 30/01/2017 20:37

The EU question had been brewing for 20 yrs & was accelerating, I can't blame Cameron for that. That referendum had to be called sometime. It became inevitable.

Hammond? Davis? Fox? None of them would be tougher towards Trump. Johnson would probably be a terrible fumbling lapdog.

She's a complete embarrassment.

The absolute bollocks she came out with about Trump not liking stairs so she held his hand! FFS does she think we all came down in the last shower? Does someone carry him up to bed, or has a Stannah stair lift been installed in the White House?

This. Our country voted to bring down a shower of shite on ourselves just as the US did. We need the US far more than they need us in terms of trade deals. It would be an absolute diplomatic disaster for us if she
Publically rejected him.
