to ask if you've unfriended people because of politics?

For example, you have friends who strongly support a leader you cannot stand?

Do you think, if they think what he's doing is ok, then they're not the kind of people you think they are.

Definitely! If I had a friend who said she supported Nigel Farrage in any way, I'd back out of the room slowly and never see her again. Ditto Trump.

One really kept going on about brexit. We had different opinions. He kept putting it all on fb and everything about his opinion and why the rest of us were idiots, really drove me nuts, probably why I don't see him as much now.

Unfortunately I can't unfriend my father because he'd take it very personally. Unfortunately as a gay woman, I take it slightly personally that he thought Trump was the better candidate.

I had a falling out with someone about the Scottish referendum. Things were said on both sides that were regrettable. I unfriended them on facebook and they took massive offence. We did make it up later but we're not as close as we were. I keep politics off social media now.

I've unfriended people for posting anti Muslim British First crap

I never would as I think it is crucial to be exposed to other viewpoints or you enter those echo chambers so talked about now. Same reason as I change newspaper every now and then. Without this I fear my ability for critical thinking would be negatively affected. Always better to debate than ignore.

I've muted people with homophobic religious views

Almost. I had a friend who I got on really really well with. I don't spout off about politics at all but I made an informed decision for my own reasons for brexit. The days after she had a nasty status shaming all the nasty racist idiots who voted to leave. Can't remember her exact wording but it was quite offensive. I then told her that I had voted leave but for my own reasons. Race not being one of them. Haven't really been the same since.

As much as some political rantings on FB by friends wind me up as they oppose my standing, everyone is entitled to their own views so I try and just scroll past.

Though over the referendum last year I had to take a sabbatical from FB for a fortnight as it got beyond ridiculous.

Anyone who posts that Britain First crap gets deleted. I won't have that racist crap in my life.

One, for being out and out BNP and I just couldn't cope with any more. Mostly I try not to even even if I disagree with them because I am aware that my FB is already something of an echo chamber, I'd like to hear different points of view, even if I don't like them.

I had a big argument about politics once with a friend, and the friendship sort of fizzled out after that. She got pretty nasty and I just wasn't interested in staying friends with someone who could be like that. She basically refused to accept that I had a different opinion to her. Apparently I was wrong and she was right because she had done politics A Level Hmm

I have friends with political views different to mine though, and it's all fine as long as we can respect each other's views.

Yep I had 'friends' who posted really nasty stuff after the GE saying all Conservative voters were selfish arseholes who smelled of shit she got deleted I didn't vote C but I have friends family and grown up dc who did. Same with the Referendum anyone who blanket called Leave voters racist or thick got deleted I don't need that sort of bigotry.

YouTheCat · 28/01/2017 19:32

I've unfriended people for being massive bigots, which usually means they'd choose to vote for someone I find repugnant. However, I have plenty of friends who aren't bigots who would vote differently from me.

I got rid of all the twats ages ago. There was one who described himself as a zionist (from the NE of England) who used to rant on about Palestine not being a valid country and wanting Israel to be free. He was a bit odd. And anyone who shared that shite about 'illegal immigrants get £500k and a merc and our pensioners have to scrap about in bins' was immediately binned for being stupid and bigoted.

I booted a couple of people off the morning after the Scottish independence referendum. They had been annoying me before the results but the sour grapes and cries of fix (at 4am as the results came in) made me kick them off.

Two of them informed no voters (me) that we should be ashamed to be Scottish and they didn't know how we could look our children in the eyes. Off you fuck then Grin

If you mean on Facebook? I wouldn't "friend" anyone unless I knew them reasonably well so I haven't had any nasty surprises in my news feed.

Unfortunately I can't unfriend the only two people I know who voted Brexit (and I doubt they would have voted for Trump, they're not insane) because they are, shall we say, "senior relatives".

Report
IceGreenTea · 28/01/2017 19:37

Yes on Facebook. My FB is currently divided - pro and anti Trump.

Political views being different isn't a reason I'd unfriend. BUT, if it's racist/sexist/Britain first etc then I'd do it.
I don't mind sharing opinions etc but there are a few friends that I felt funny about after seeing their fundamentalist beliefs e.g. racist reasons for voting Brexit, believing that Christians are being oppressed and that gay people shouldn't have the same rights.

I've blocked someone's posts - more because there are several every day about his political opinions and it's boring than that I disagree with them (which I mainly do). Personally, I try to keep politics off social media.

if you have real friends then you know them and respect their views. Part of the process of becoming friends with someone includes finding out how the other thinks.

If you have 794 FB friends then it really doesn't matter either way as all you are doing is defining how you see yourself by your choice of "friends" and the things you "like"

This is interesting. It seems to suggest the left wingers are the most militant and intolerant. Perhaps the right wingers are more tolerant of others' views. I tend to look for the positive aspects in friends. No-one is perfect.

Yeah I don't post political stuff. I am not a liberal, I'm not even American. I don't know though if I get offended too quickly.

Example:

One wrote - "Q: Why should liberals be buried 100 feet deep? A: Because deep down, they're really good people.😂😂:

Another: "What do you get when a million women march in DC? I don't know but it surely isn't dinner.😂😂"

Will I be banned from mn for laughing at that?

I only recall unfriending one person - she posted how much fun it was to trash a house and leave litter about. Bye bye, daddy's little princess.

I have fb friends on both side of brexit and the us election - that's their opinions.
