Toilet at work left in a disgusting state: aibu to send a general email?

A poo thread!

Between 13 staff (rising to 18+ over the next couple of years), there are two unisex toilets, one either end of a long, long corridor. Every single day, one toilet is left with sloppy poo all down the inside, truly horrific! We know who it is, he goes into a clean loo, it's disgusting when he comes out. We left a very polite 'please clean up after yourself' note and bought a loo brush. No change. Premises/building manager have been called several times when it was really horrific.

AIBU to send a general email as the note has made no difference? I don't want to approach the guy, he's senior to me, really lovely (bar his shitty toilet habits) He must know we know, tho! Does he not clean up at home and check before he leaves?! He's started putting down the lid so at least the poo is hidden from first glance. (Not sure if I should be grateful about that Confused Should I start leaving some Branflakes on his desk? Or some Fruit and Fibre?!

It would be good to have two loos available, we mostly use it at break/lunch, so time is limited.

Bet the cleaner loves him.

Just to point out a pet hate though, brushes aren't for cleaning fresh shit. It just clings to the brush and ends up smelly in its dish.

You would be better buying some toilet duck and asking every one to slime the toilet after they've dropped one. It'll just rinse off mostly with the next flush.

If the poo is sloppy, surely more fibre is the last thing he needs? Perhaps you could offer him some boiled eggs?

Seriously, talk to your manager, their problem to sort out.

Yuck!

Toilet brushes are vile. I'd suggest leaving a bottle of bleach and asking the offenders to give that a good squirt.. and to come back and give it a flush!

I remember once at a previous job there was a special staff meeting to address this same issue. It was cringe-tastic not least because we all new who the culprit was!

It did however solve the problem. I think I direct email is fine

What's wrong with folding up a thick bit of loo roll and wiping it off and then flushing. That's what I do at work and at home if this happens. It's your mess. You've wiped yourself so why not the loo too. You then wash your hands and its the paper your touching not the faecal matter.

Can you split the toilets, one for ladies one for gents?
He may be more embarrassed if he knows the men know it's him.
If not at least you won't need to put up with it.

Leave him a note on his desk anonymously saying "please do not leave your signature in the toilet. The loo brush is to the side, kindly clean up after yourself"

Yes a general email is fine. Along the lines of asking the culprit to make sure they clean up their 'unpleasant stains', pointing out bleach is provided.
We have regular emails about the state of the loos at work and they are very very blunt.

My work loos have moments like this. We share toilets with other companies so don't always know who the culprit is. There's also some cultural differences meaning we have had some people attempting to squat over the toilet (by standing on and occasionally breaking the toilet seat!) and missing completely Confused Hmm but not even attempting to clean it up. Seriously? Is it really our cleaner's job to pick up shit off the floor?!

I also got caught out yesterday when no one bothered to change the toilet roll when it ran out.

It does make me wonder what the hell do some people's homes look like?!

I would send the email. You know who it's to, everyone else knows and the culprit no doubt knows too, but sending the email allows everyone to play innocent and carry on without any awkwardness. Do it!

This is what the note said: Please leave this toilet clean, wipe it, flush it. He hasn't.

It's been done on the other floors, which have more loos (like near the staff room) and I'd love to, but the nasty loo is at the far end of the ridiculously long corridor to two other guys, so a bit unfortunate. I think poo man should be told to clean up after himself, but I don't want to embarrass him. He's nice, bar the shit he leaves all down the toilet!

I'm with Merlin- leave a bottle of bleach.

Toilet brushes are revolting.

Unimaginative how do you know that they were standing on the toilet and squatting over it?! Is that a thing? I have never heard of it! Did they tell you that's how they broke the toilet? So many questions.

Sorry and about the op, I think he should be talked to personally. He clearly thinks the rules don't apply to him and doesn't give a shit (ha) that he is leaving it in a disgusting state for others.

Report
PollyPerky · 27/01/2017 21:06

storm it IS something that happens! People who come from countries where squatting is the norm tend to stand on the seat. Someone I know says in their office loos they have to put cartoons of 'do not stand on seat' for visitors from India etc.

Squatting over the loo is a known cultural practice - I think it's to do with the surface of the loo being considered unclean. You can get signs like this to discourage it:

I think an anonymous note is the way to go.

I have found general messages about horrible toilet habits don't work. A colleague of mine used to do a gross thing and leave it under the sign saying please don't do it.

I bet even if someone had a direct word with them they would still do it. If he puts the lid down he obviously knows it's a problem but is not prepared to clean up after himself.

I hope he washes his hands (bet he doesn't.)

agree with the bottle of bleach and maybe a sign like my DM'S if you sprinkle when you tinkle, be sweet and wipe the seat ( maybe add some or change some words to it ) Grin but on a serious note it is disgusting, no toilet brush though, I am a cleaner and so many times I have gone to use the toilet brush, only to find it clumped up with s**t.. it makes me sick.

I don't know if it is allowed to keep toilets locked, but you could suggest that if the problem continues then a lock will be fitted and the key holder will check the toilet after every use and anyone who has left a mess will be asked to clean it up.

Probably this goes against some human rights rules to shit as you wish though.

ToadsforJustice · 27/01/2017 21:20

I would check that the toilet is clean. I would follow him when he goes, wait until he finishes, as he walks away, check again. If any evidence is left behind, call him back and tell him to clean his shit up.

Urgh, so it's cleaner to have your shoes on the loo seat? What about for other people??

And Urgh, op, what a pain. Sounds like you/his manager will have to be blunt!
