Why is it so strongly fucking flavoured?!! DS won't take infacol or gripe water because they both taste so bloody strong. Why?? He's only used to Breast milk, why flavour medication of something he has no experience of??

So bloody angry Angry

To mask the flavour of the actual active ingredients presumably

Report
RobinHumphries · 25/01/2017 17:59

I guess to cover the flavour of the active ingredients

It is strong but to be honest when they are a bit older and are Ill you will be grateful that they will consent to having calpol

Report
DaisyQueen · 25/01/2017 18:00

Because the actual flavour is disgusting. Calpol for instance, have you ever chewed a paracetamol? Can't imagine babes/children would be too keen

Report
sotiredbutworthit · 25/01/2017 18:00

The taste of the active ingredient is much worse!!

Boots gripe water tastes of apple instead of gherkins which is better when you get covered in the sticky smelly stuff

Calm down, being so angry won't help.

The taste of the actual medicine won't be pleasant so will need to be covered up by something sweet, or I imagine it would be much worse without.

I thought made up late one night that Infacol smelled so strong so:

A) I could smell it on her breath if I couldn't remember if I'd given her any.

B) her resulting burps would smell of it, to make me believe that the Infacol was wholly responsible for the burp encouraging me to rely on it.

I've tasted it though, it hardly tastes of anything at all - it's all scent. Could you keep a muslin between your LO's nostrils and mouth when you pop it in his gob?

I bet your Ds would refuse if it tasted of medicine

Does them good to try new flavours

Are you suggesting it should be breastmilk flavoured? Breastmilk has many different tastes depending on the mother's diet and various other factors! Don't forget its for older children too so needs to be something which is generally palatable but strong enough to mask other flavours. They all hate it at first and tend to swallow about 0.1ml for every 2.4ml deposited on the carpet, sofa and your clothes. I feel your frustration but is misdirected!

I used to struggle to swallow tablets so I once broke a paracetamol and ate the contents. Blimey, I can tell you why they put strong flavours in - unflavoured medicine tastes unbelievably disgusting!

Most children who have calpol are older than 6 months old and therefore are weaned. Unless you want them to make a formula flavoured calpol, a breast milk flavoured one and then calpol, you must see you are being a bit bonkers here.

I'm with you partly. dS2 had to have anti-Bs at Christmas and I let them prescribe liquid penicillin. It was orange flavoured and tasted of orangey puke. He was gagging and had a chesty cough anyway - it actually made him throw up it's was so disgusting. Tablets all the way now (he's eight though)

Wait till you have to try and get penicillin v or flucloxacillin down them. They have taken the sugar out and it's vile!

Gripe water has no active ingredients, you could give water if you want and tell yourself it's gripe water, it would have about the same effect Grin

Yeah, kids' medicine here in Germany isn't flavoured at all and it's awful. DS would rather take ground up adult medicine.

You can express some milk and put the medicine into it in a bottle.

I bloody love calpol. Bought the tesco version, cherry flavour. The kids don't like it, I've been necking it.

Report
BIWI · 25/01/2017 20:40

I hope you haven't been necking it, Blazed - you do know that
a) it contains paracetamol and b) overdosing on paracetamol is incredibly dangerous? Hmm

dylsmimi · 25/01/2017 20:41

toddler I used to love that banana penicillin when I was younger
I may have to check out the cherry calpol - I've been known to take some when I can't find adult paracetamol

Obviously the correct dose biwi but that's lots of syringes!

DS used to loath Calpol or anything strawberry flavored, finally found a caramel flavored paracetamol after 2 years of him puking every dose of Calpol.

Silverthorn · 25/01/2017 20:44

I'm with you. Just had to fire some calpol into 9mo. He hates the stuff. Most of it ended up on me, he was squirming and crying so much. He cried himself to sleep as a bonus though. Poor little thing.
2yo loves the stuff though.

I remember trying to get prednisolone into ds when he was about 6 months old - now that was fun!

Biwi you know calpol isn't an adult strength dose of paracetamol don't you? You'd have to drink a fair amount To get an adult sized dose

But yes op you abu about the flavour of calpol. What else could it be?

If you ever have to give them an unflavoured medicine you will understand! My DD's reflux medicine is the work of the devil...
