AIBU?

19 mo fell out his cot... AIBU to think this is too early to change to toddler bed??

In fairness he was standing and playing this afternoon (at night he is in a grobag and we are soft so he doesn't go in there til he's already asleep )

I was hoping he'd be at least 2 before he went into a bed. He's only just started sleeping through in the last couple of months and now we're going to be up every 5 minutes when he climbs out and walks into us aren't we??

I wasn't ready for this. Collective wisdom massively appreciated please!

Hi Haribo, in my opinion it does seem young for a bed but you do have to do what is safest and if he can climb out then he does need to be in a toddler bed so as not to hurt himself.

One question, and sorry you have already thought of and done this, but is the cot on the lowest setting? We have 3 and dd2 is on the lowest setting on her cot and she is by no means a tiny thing.

We did it at that age as I was about to have a c section so had no choice. Ours only slept through at 14 months! He got out of bed once and we v v v v firmly told him off. He never did it again. We were expecting having to put stair gate on his room but never had to. It was lovely being able to sit next to his bed and read and have proper cuddles. Bought him a nice quilt cover that he was excited about. To be honest it was a bit of a non-event!

Would you rather he falls from a distance of about 6 inches or a couple of feet? Once then can get out of a cot on their own they should be in a bed IMO.

My twins were on mattresses on the floor for a while - would that work better for you? And seriously work on him sleeping on his own - I did controlled crying for a week at about the same age with co-sleeping boob monster DS3 and after a harrowing first night he caught on and is fine now.

I took the side of my sons cot younger than that so that age is fine.

It's better to have it off than him climbing it again and falling.

When they start climbing out its time to at least take the side off. You may feel better with a bed tbh.

Moved my first one out of a cot at 12months, onto a proper bed with bedrails. Bit of a non-event. Didn't use cot for second one. Co-slept then own bed aged 2. Tbh I'm not sure cots are rly that useful...

Our's were in a bed before then.

DS2 used to wake himself up crashing into the cot sides. Once he was in a bed he slept so much better. We put a soft bed guard on the side of it.

Mine made it to just over a year before they went into own beds. Early walkers and climbers. They climed out of cot at a year and fell so they went into their own rooms and beds

Dd1 was in a bed about then, she was absaloutly fine. It was a low bed but I don't remember her ever falling out anyway. Dd2 will be in one earlier because dc3 will need the cot.

We put DS in a normal bed with a bed guard age 14 months as he hated his cot. He's fallen out once. Plus it's easier to lie next to him to comfort him.

I personally think that 2 sounds a little old to still be in a cot. Transitioning DD to toddler bed was a non event. In your position I'd go with whatever is the safest option.

Do you already have the toddler bed? If not, a standard single might be more practical.

That was the age we moved DS. He had been able to climb out of his cot for a while. He hated bedtime and had screaming tantrums during which he would throw himself out of the cot rather than climbing carefully out.
So we moved him out in a hurry, and he spent about a month on a temporary bed on the floor before we got around to buying a toddler bed. He was far safe in the toddler bed. (Still hated bedtime though!)

DS1 went into a single bed at 18m after he fell out of his cot when climbing. He'd also stand and try to rock it so hard I worried he'd tip it over. He was absolutely fine in a bed, only fell out once and we didn't use a bed guard. He doesn't move around much once asleep though.

DS2 pretty much coslept with me until he was 3 and then went into a bunk bed with his brother (though still creeps in to me often). He's never fallen out of bed even when tiny.

@johnlapsleyparlabane why is 2 too old? What benefit is there to taking the sides off is DC isn't a climber?

I've always done it as soon as they could climb out for safety. It was different for each child.

I've never actually thought about it. In my family we just tend to move to beds around 12 to 18mths. Reading these posts, maybe we do it early

3 of my 4 have been in a bed by that age for the very same reason. It's so much safer than them climbing out the cot.

I intend to leave my DS in his cot until he's three! If you have a climber then fair enough. I don't understand why you would move them unless you have to.

DS went into a bed at 10 months after climbing out of his cot. He never fell out of the bed.

dc1 was found balancing precariously on the side of cot at 12m.
toddler bed was bought that afternoon!

whoever says it's a waste of money: dc was in toddler bed until age 7. so we got good use out of it and lots of floor space.

I should have mentioned, he has a sleepyhead in there, and standing on the sides of this is how he climbed out today. I will remove that tonight, but he cuddles the sides and uses it as a pillow, so ultimately will have to change to a bed and continue with it in there.

He has a cotbed so is only a matter of removing the side but (and possibly being a bit pfb here) it seems quite high! Yes, it is already on the lowest setting to the pp who asked.

And of course, whoever said about falling a couple of inches rather than the side of the cot is spot on. I'm just (selfishly) not looking forward to nocturnal wandering, although I'm taking heart from those of you who haven't found it to be too much of an issue.

dickiedoodah bear in mind they'll more than likely need access to a toilet in the night before 3.
