AIBU?

To propose this radical solution to world problems? ( bit political...)

This is really just idle musings but hear me out. The world seems to be so polarised now I'm starting to wonder would it be preferable, or even possible, to have whole countries that are either completely left wing or right wing as there seems to be so much conflict within countries about which is the best way forward?

I have no idea how much this would work, I guess the only model I can think of ( which was very brutal), was Partition in India, when Pakistan ( which was previously part of India), was made a completely different country.

I've been thinking about this as I don't want to live in a right wing country, I want to live in a country where minorities are respected and supported, where everyone is given an equal chance to fulfil their potential, where everyone has access to the best education and healthcare, and where I'm quite frankly sick to death of the Government swinging from left to right and where 'democracy' actually means that the minority that bothers to vote, is the group that gets their voice heard.

Totally prepared to be told I'm being U or naive, just wondered what what other pp thought about it...

.... well, the good thing is that you know already the answer to your AIBU. But I think that naive or stupid is actually quite charitable.

I can't figure how this could possibly work. People aren't fully left or right-where would a centrist live? There are massive degrees of left and right. What would happen if someone didn't agree with the government? They'd have to leave the country?

I don't want to live in a right wing country either. There aren't many places in the world that suit me. I'm wondering if it's possible to get enough people together to buy an island somewhere and start our own country?

Your idea is no real different to how the world is now. Where religious groups have gathered in a area and in time that area became a country (Israel).

In order to do what you are saying you would have to create countries based on political and religious beliefs. AND insure that they have equal access to oil, food etc.

In an ideal world things would be as you say.
YANBU it's how you feel. If it's something that really bothers you, then make changes to your lifestyle so they don't bother you. Going off grid, not reading the news, the AIBU is going to stir debate so a wide birth here too.
You have the choice to make your life how you want it. So you could either be active or inactive, depending on how much it consumes you. You could appeal for rights etc, or you can say I guess I won't make much difference and shut off from it all. I guess it sounds drastic, but that is the easiest solution.
You could live a life where friends & family call, text or email and avoid social media. Completely tailor your life to what you want to achieve. We all have choices, I guess you need to reflect on what you want to do ultimately.
If funds allow, escaping to the Scottish Highlands could be bliss. Do you have a DP with the same views?

There are lots of communist countries all you lefties can bugger off to.
Oh hang on, no there isn't.

Are you suggestion whole scale movement of populations OP?

So millions of refugees and immigrants? Most of whom wouldn't have the funds to support moving and resettling in a politically appropriate country.

Would you want to leave your home?

yes you're being naive as the world and people's views are not so black and white. We live in a democracy where you can vote for a political party.

I would have to live somewhere in the middle

Would that be the midlands?

I would prefer somewhere warmer

And did that go well, do you think? I'll give you a hint; somewhere between one and two MILLION people died.

I think both sides are equally scary, somewhere in the middle is ideal. But I don't think you'd enjoy a communist regime, just like you appear not to like the Tory's? Is that what you're getting at?

She can believe what she wants, or they can, but there's no where this utopian ideal has existed and gone well.
One example Germany with the Berlin Wall. Are you old enough to recall that?

Despairs at 'left wing' stupidity

Interesting thought experiment, but even if you could peacefully divide everyone according to their views, and allocate fair land etc to the new nations, the trouble would start when one (or probably lots) of the new countries decided they needed more land to support their growing populations.
Yes, in my centrist-lefty-liberal-but-not-too-far-left-utopia the birth rate wouldn't be too high due to plentiful contraception, legal terminations, quality education and rights of women but what about next door far-right-mysogenist-quiverful-religious-fundamental-land*?
How are we going to defend ourselves against them when they decide they need more living space? Our military will be rubbish because we spent all our money on healthcare and education...

Right, could I ask that all you nice fluffy liberal people step to the left of the world. And all you horrid nasty other people slink over to the other side.

Ooh! That wasn't too difficult was it?

Right, run along now and run your countries. I'll be marking your progress in 1 month's time. Try hard to get a gold star to put in your new 'Constitution' books.

Now, off you go, I need a cup of tea.

You might want to consider parts of Scandinavia or Canada if you are looking to relocate to a more left wing country.

Goodness - this is very simplistic OP.

Plus, more seriously, no matter how small the final groups of people become, there will ALWAYS be something to argue about. Look at how many divisions there are within liberalism, or the disagreements feminists have with each other over a whole range of issues -and this is perfectly healthy and normal. I have never met anyone, and probably never will, who shares my exact political beliefs. Especially as my beliefs change and adapt over time (also normal and healthy).

squishysquirmy · 19/01/2017 20:13

I didn't read the op as being serious about it, although I agree it would be ludicrously simplistic if she was.
This stands out though: "...democracy' actually means that the minority that bothers to vote, is the group that gets their voice heard.."
C'mon now. Surely you know what the answer to that problem is? Wink

Like I said, it was just idle musings, I've been thinking recently about where would be an ideal place to live, and there really isn't anywhere, even the Scandinavian countries have got their own problems now ( and are way too cold!)

Frankly, I am feeling v gloomy about living in a post Brexit/Trump world and just wish I could live in a fair and decent society. Is this that too much to ask for...?

Another thought OP at what age would you have to choose your country?

Would you exile all 18yos with opposing political views on their birthdays?

None of those were left wing. I don't think you should be calling anyone stupid, on that evidence.

OP, be the change you want to see in the world. It's that simple.
