...."Wish you were here!"

Stupid discussion with my sister (neither of us can remember how we got onto it!) and we are both convinced that we are right!

I think it is you, the postcard writer, asking the recipient if they are jealous of your lovely holiday and wish that they were there too. My sister says that it is you saying that you wish the recipient was there on hols with you.

Who is right?!

I think your sister is right.

I can't say I've ever thought about it in depth before though.

The reason I think that I am right is because the TV show with Judith Chalmers (sp?) was called "Wish you were here....?"

You used to go on hols and write postcards 'home' saying weather lovely etc Wish you were here. 😁

Your sis yer is correct, the holiday programme of old made a play on the phrase.

I agree with your sister.

The Judith Chambers travel show was a play on the phrase and used in a different context to advertise holiday destinations

So you think it's "(Do you) Wish You Were Here?"

And your sis thinks it's "(We) Wish You Were Here! "

If so, your sister is correct.

I can deal with being mean and boastful! Not that it matters because neither of us ever send postcards anyway!

Your sister is right - you are telling the person you miss then and that you wish they were there with you at this moment. See reference: Avril Lavigne - Wish you were here :)

Your sister is right.

It's not often that everyone agrees on an AIBU, this should go in Classics.
