AIBU?

To want to live in nicer area?

I am living in a nice new build area, it is not rural though but near to the semi rural areas around. Mix of immigrants (mainly indian and chinese, EU) and majority is white British. I myself is an indian immigrant. As all new builds, a few houses are council tenants, white british only. By all standards it is a very nice area, but we had many many incidents of trespassing, leaving garbage at main door, destroyed newly planted hedge, scratching cars, leaving dirty nappy at garden entrance, ringing doorbell runaways etc. These all done by children (as young as 3 upto 18 year olds and young adults) from council houses (seen them doing it!), they have been given warnings by police but no improvements. Now we don't even report it! We were told by another neighbour that council tenants don't like well settled immigrants (with cars and houses) and hence they keep doing it. It is never done to white british households around us. We tend to ignore it all assuming they are the people who don't know any better.
Anyways, we are trying to move up the property ladder and finalised a house in a semi rural leafy area. Upper middle class area, super nice swanky houses and no social housing for miles. All the residents own their houses and fields and horses and RRs, settled there for generations, family money, all white british.
I am bit worried that what if they don't like an immigrant moving in there and we face similar situations there? They definitely won't throw garbage but then what could they do? We have no reason to believe that it will happen but I couldn't be able to ignore if it does. Wouldn't be able to ignore it because those people do know better. But after Brexit and Trump, I am afraid nobody likes idea of immigrants settling. AIBU?

The white British reference has been overdone.

I'm Indian (born in Britain not an emigre) and have found a similar attitude in some people until I open my mouth (have the worst East Midlands accent) & then it's all great. Strangely enough most of the racist abuse I've received somes from new Indian immigrants (most of them think Indian born girls are loose unless it's their own kids of course). My guess is if you're friendly, welcoming, and mix into your newer posher community you'll be ok.

How bloody stereotypical. I've lived in council accommodation all my life. My parents bought theirs and I'm currently in the process of buying mine. 80% of the houses in my road are council and we have no problems what so ever even with those from different backgrounds.
Maybe it's your attitude causing the problem?

Sounds like this new neighbourhood you're moving to is about to gain the arrival of a prejudiced and racist person more than anything.

How do you know all this? Zoopla doesn't go into this much detail...

I think most people, all other things being equal, would like to live in nice areas and if you have to live with daily antisocial behaviour of any type (regardless of the motivation) then the idea of moving can be particularly appealing.

Unfortunately, the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. Regrettably, there are plenty of people who don't want immigrants in the UK at all, never mind in their own back yards, and it would be dangerous to assume that you can somehow escape any anti-immigrant sentiment simply by moving to a posher or more rural area.

It's also worth pointing out that there are probably plenty of tightly-knit communities who don't want white British people living there either.

Move there you'll be fine. I darent set foot on our local council estate. Like you described exactly kids running around half dressed, dumped rubbish up and down the street, loads of bad behaviour. I know not all estates are like that but they are round 'ere!

Thanks for the all the sensible replies. I guess I just have to accept that I don't belong wherever I go neighbourhood wise. I am the 'colour of the poop' as described by a 6 yr old just now outside my house who threw empty takeaway boxes next to my car right in front of me!

White middle class people can be every bit as racist as people living in social housing. They just tend to use longer words to express their prejudice.

Prince Phillip is evidence enough that bigotry is not unique to any one social class.

She hasn't written them off as racists though Hmm

what if they don't like an immigrant moving in there

We have no reason to believe that it will happen but I couldn't be able to ignore if it does

Sounds to me like she's just worried about going straight from the frying pan into the fire if she moves.

Why can't people just get on together and accept each other's culture and religion/ way of life...what's wrong with a bit of respect and tolerance once in a while

That's the same thing in my opinion, it's fine to complain about racist abuse you're currently experiencing where you live, but when you're hypothesising that when you move, you may get the same is essentially writing them off. It's true that it could potentially happen, but the salient information would be that it hasn't even had the opportunity to arise at all yet. Their new neighbours could love them for all they know, going in with an already formed opinion of racist white council scum, but changing it to white middle class home owner scum, is racist and prejudiced.

The follow up post of "I guess that I just have to accept that I don't belong wherever I go neighbourhood wise" cements in that opinion as well IMO, and sounds a bit "woe is me".

Nasty racist post. White British racists eh? What all of them? Really? Yet it is you who are making all the distinctions. And if you moved in next to my white British friends what would you expect them to be like before you met them?
Exactly! That, my dear, is called prejudice.

Randymagnum2 I understand your frustration and calling me fucking racist says more about you than me. I have not written off anybody as racist for that matter. In the few council houses on my otherwise nice estate some people are racist, the ones who tell their children to do all the above mentioned. Tell me if I am wrong to write "them" off as racist? I never said that all are, that's what you assumed from your own knowledge. On the contrary I feel for these children when I see them coming back from school by themselves to their often empty houses looking for food ( no idea what where parents are). I am only talking about my area council houses not all council houses. You can read whatever you want and put your nice comments. After all this is online and you can harass anybody! I wouldn't be surprised to hear the same thing from you offline as well though.
To make myself clear, I do believe there are nasty as well as good people in every community and race. I will just have to grow my brown skin a bit thicker, that's all!

"council tenants don't like well settled immigrants" what a load of rubbish!

You might be the subject of racist abuse and if you are report it to the police. It's racially aggravated assault whether physical or otherwise. However, I have an inkling suspicion you might be coming across as stuck up and aloof. You certainly sound it! Can I ask why you haven't reported this assault? Or the child neglect?

How many of the people calling OP racist has ever been the victim of racist abuse?
I'd wager none....

In my experience OP there is about the same number of properly racist people in all social classes/groups, but sometimes working class racists can be louder/clearer/more direct about it, which can be harder to deal with because at least if posh racist people are racist it's a bit easier if they're not shouting/throwing things at you but instead just muttering about you behind your back. However I get the feeling you feel isolated where you currently live? If that is the case, nobody can tell you whether you will still be isolated in the other area or not. You might be, you might not be, it depends entirely on the people who live there (and yourself too, whether you reach out etc). It's always going to be a gamble for those of us from ethnic minorities unfortunately, all you can really do is hope for the best and be as open and friendly as possible with your new neighbours. I feel for you. Have experienced racist abusive many times and I'm only in my early 20s and usually pass as white so I'm sure it's much worse for people with darker skin Sad. People who've never experienced it will never understand.
