School cheese pie/flan

Just reminiscing about 70's/80's meals and remembered the 'cheese pie' I used to get at school in the 80's early 90's! have googled and lots of the recipes have onion and things in! not my school cheese pie so be off! Angry

Can anyone else remember it? it was definitely just cheese and egg and was crispy brown cheese on top.

And for the 'what is your unreasonableness?' just to ask for the recipe! please!

We used to have cheese and rice flan. Sounds like the same thing. And I have the recipe!

It was cheesy mashed potatoes baked in a pastry case. Not sure if it had eggs in. Sometimes our dinner ladies put slices of tomato on top.
We used to call it cheese disaster area.

Ours was cheese and sliced potatoes in a pastry case

I remember school cheese pie - like quiche but without any ham or vegetables in it, not that I'd heard of quiche back then. Definitely no rice or potatoes in it. Google school dinner recipes - I found lots for cheese pie/flan - seem to have onion in, which I don't recall though, so I agree with you there.

Ours was cheese and egg. Served with chips and beans. Delicious!

Cheese flan is just cheese and eggs. As far as I know cheese pie is the one with mash. Ours had slices of tomato on top too (about 4 of them on the whole thing. Everyone picked them off, obviously).

This looks roughly like the cheese flan we had: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2631636/ultimate-cheese-quiche
They've gone all posh here and called it quiche but I reckon it's about the same.

And yes, always with chips and beans!

Ours was strong cheese, with egg - like a firm quiche

You would be surprised OP. The cheese and rice flan is delicious - my mum was a school cook. I even have the recipe for chocolate crunch.

If you lived in the north west it would definitely be cheese and rice

Purplesky - can you see the rice? My cheese flan was in Macclesfield and then right near Blackpool in the 80s and it didn't look like anything other than eggs and cheese. Are you about to blow my mind and tell me it had rice in it???

It sounds vaguely familiar. Are you sure it wasn't just quiche without side crusts?

Does anyone else remember spaghetti cheese pie? I could go a big slice of that right now.

Ours was just cheese and egg too. It was my absolute nightmare. We always had two options but if you were one of the last classes to lunch option 1 would always have run out and you'd be on the flan vom

Cheese wheels at our school, kind of like a cheese pasty but shaped into a sort of whirl shape, like a Danish pastry. I loved them, would kill for the recipe.

I think I've found the recipe for you. It's a school dinner recipe website so good chance it's similar to the one you remember from school.

I remember! It was just cheese and egg not potatoes. It was square/rectangle with a crust just on one side. Bit soggier than normal quiche

Delicious with chips and beans!

I used to love school cheese pie and the mince and dumplings. After many years I have conquered my fear of pastry - I might have to give it a go.

If it was the one we had in the mid to late 90's i think it was just cheese and egg, and it was bloody delicious!

Oh OP we had it too! We always had it with chips. It was the BEST and I often wonder how to make it.

used to love this too!

Also loved the school Rice Krispie cakes. Always tasted so good and have never been able to replicate exactly at home.

I was in Liverpool, I remember it being soggy with no rice or potatoes and absolutely disgusting

Ours had onion in, but so soft you couldn't taste it. Together with cheese and egg, very wobbly!
