To think driving at 30 mph in a 60 mph zone is unacceptable?

Stuck behind a driver this afternoon who was going 30, yes, 30 in a 60. Straight roads, clear weather, etc etc. No one could over take for about 10-15 mins as there were too many cars coming the other way and there ended up being a massive tailback of traffic. AIBU to think it's completely out of order to drive 30 miles below the speed limit in good conditions?

Do you remember the number plate? If you do, report the driver to the police. He/she could get anything from a verbal warning to having to go to court for driving without due care and attention.

If it was a straight road YANBU. Windy country roads that are 60mph with blind bends and no lines so really shouldn't be national speed limit are a different matter though.

It is annoying. It isn't dangerous. It would be more dangerous for someone developing as a driver to go faster than the top speed they were comfortable with.

If someone isn't comfortable driving over 30 though I would question their safety to be on the road!

it is dangerous, as you spend your time looking how to overtake instead of driving properly

if you cannot get to to touching distance of the speed limit, why not pull over and stop everyone behind you getting annoyed???

If someone isn't developed enough as a driver to do more than 30 in a 60, they shouldn't be on 60mph roads.

There is no specific penalty for driving too slowly and as such, penalties may be as little as a verbal warning by a police officer along with a lecture of the dangers of driving too slow and in more serious cases, a motorist may find themselves in court charged with driving without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other road users (penalty code CD30).

You've got to practise driving to be good at it. It is unreasonable to say that someone who isn't comfortable close to the speed limit straight away shouldn't be driving.

They should be driving with an instructor who is selecting roads appropriate for their ability though! As nothing in the OP suggests this was a learner then yes to be on th road they should have confidence to drive closer to the limit

Yes GilMartin they would need some form of evidence for any form of prosecution, a single member of the public grassing isn't sufficient. They may give a warning but I doubt they could be bothered. I was given some very good advice by a traffic inspector about what to do in the event of a visit in a situation like this.

It's extremely dangerous to do this! The worst is motorways where someone is doing 40 in the fast lane, you end up coming up behind them so fast and having to slam your breaks on. Then do an illegal manoeuvre undertaking because they seem to not have any intention of moving. Argh!!

I've got lifts with a colleague before and they drive 40 on the motorway. I don't go with them anymore, lol.

No it definitely wasn't a learner driver! It was a man by himself. It was a straight single-carriageway A-road from one town to the next

As they wouldn't have past their driving test driving at that speed in the first place Trifleorbust then it is perfectly reasonable that if they aren't comfortable driving at the correct speed for the road and conditions then they shouldn't be on that road.
