AIBU?

AIBU to be upset over friends attitude to job news

I fear I am BU but this has thrown me a little.

A couple of days ago I got a new job at an agency for a rather competitive industry after a lengthy hard interview and vetting process. When I told my friends they were all wonderfully supportive as I have been out of work for a couple of months and really wanted this job. One of my friends (I say friend, they are more a friend of a friend whom I have clashed with a little before) asked straight away what the agency was as he wanted a job there too and started to be quite aggressive and argument when I said he was being a bit grabby as I had only just found out that afternoon I got the job. I left it at that and said I would talk him through it another time as we were on a night out and not the place for the discussion.

Next day I found he had applied and he had been offered a similar position in the same work place and then started gloating that "I wasn't as special as I thought I was" and that he "deserved this more" than me as he had wanted it for longer.

So I guess i'm asking AIBU to be a little miffed over his attitude of it all?

He deserves a job as much as you do. His attitude stinks though

I wonder if he will last as long as you with that attitude.

If you have a job, why couldn't he apply too? You both sound 8.

I think OP is just feeling pissy and her back is up because this guy shat all over her good news.

He sounds an idiot. I would be upset if I knew that someone like that was going to be a colleague.

I should add we're both young and starting out in this industry although I have been involved in it for 5 years already. By no means do I not want him to get a job, I am very happy to help him out and even offered to talk him through the interview process.

I just didn't think it was fair to go off at me and act so grabby. My friend has a tendency to turn things onto himself a lot.

I know its pathetic but I just wanted one night to celebrate my achievement.

Eh? He applied and found out he had the job all in the space of a few hours??

Why didn't you just tell him what the agency was? He probably got annoyed that you were being so protective for no reason.

Surely him wanting/getting a similar job doesn't make any difference?

You still got the job?

What an overreaction

How was he being grabby? I don't understand, it reads like he was trying to ask you about it and you didn't wish to explain.

What did he mean by "grabby"? If there were other positions available you were a bit off not to let him know where to apply...
Awful of him to crow about it, though.

^ yes Enid, I didn't get that either (especially after a lengthy interview process...!!??!!

@Enidblyton1 The way the agency works is that you get offered a role when you apply , go into for an interview to see how suitable you are then from there you will get confirmed in that role and offered more work from there.

@RandomDent the work changes weekly so you get confirmed employment within the agency but you are still constantly fighting for weekly roles, so you are never guaranteed work as such.

It is a tricky thing to explain sorry if its not that clear.

What industry recruits like that??

Bluntness100 · 12/01/2017 21:18

Why did you have to go through a lengthy application process and he did it in a day? Or did you simply refuse to talk to him and he'd already applied so you didn't know?

Floggingmolly · 12/01/2017 21:20

Why were you "celebrating your achievement" when everyone who applies gets a role?? (mindboggling!)

Well he doesn't sound very nice.

I'd steer a bit clear at work I think, he sounds likely to talk you down to others.

It seems like if you had just told him the name of the agency up front, he wouldn't have been so snide when he got the job. Why not just tell him?

So, he asked you where the job was because he's in the same industry, and you accused him of being 'grabby' just for asking that question?!

No wonder he got a stroppy if you were that rude to someone who asked you a perfectly reasonable question.

To be honest you both sound like a pair of childish drama queens.

I didn't want to talk about it that night as it was not the right place or time, we were on a night out with some mates catching up. He's one to get very argumentative easily so I said I would talk to him more in depth about it the next day when we weren't drunk and I could get my paperwork up.

His attitude is was upset me the most as instead of just going "well done lala" his response was "Oh cool whats the agency I should think if you can get in I can"
