AIBU to argue with guy who threatened to kick my dog

AIBU to argue...my young sprocker was off his lead and bounded over to a guy and his dog barking and play bowing...obviously wanting to play. His dog was on a long retractable leash. I called my dog back but he was not listening so I ran over and yelled at him and he did stop but carried on barking. The guy said ``I'll kick him I'll kick him" I said hes not being aggressive and he said Hes tried to bite my dog twice....untrue...he was asking to play...He said I should keep the dog on a lead if I can't control him. By this time I had put his lead on him then as he walked away I said "have a nice day a**hole" Im so upset....yes maybe I should keep him on a lead but hes normally very good and is a friendly pup. 20 months old and still in training. AIBU to be trying to train my dog without a lead. We go to obedience classes and start agility this week.

YABVU. I say that as a dog owner. If your dog's recall isn't good, then it needs to be on a leash. What if the other dog was aggressive?

He was unreasonable to suggest he was going to kick your dog but YABVU to firstly let your dog approach a dog on a lead and secondly to be so rude to him . It doesn't matter if your dog is aggressive or not it's out of your control and bothering somebody else and his dog may well be on a lead because it is aggressive , people like you make me very cross so I can see his POV .

Your dog needs to stay on a lead until it has a reliable recall

If your dog's recall isn't good it shouldn't be off the lead.

Yep YABU. I had a puppy about the same age come bounding up to me and try to snap at my ankles last week. The owner choose not to apologise but instead threaten to punch me because her dog tried to bite me. But he was only a puppy so it's ok really . No it fucking isn't. Control your dog or keep it on a lead. Don't be one of "those" dog owners

Unless your dog has perfect recall I wouldn't get too high handed about people who aren't happy that you can't control your dog. My dog is very nervous around other dogs and she'd have been in bits if your dog did that to her. Hence why I don't let her off the lead and don't mince my words when random dogs come running over clearly outwith the control of their owner.

Ok......I can admit when Im in the wrong....will keep him on a leash until his recall is perfect. Thank you f r responding and putting me right...damn it!

Sorry, yabu. If you can't control your dog yet off the lead,and your recall is not perfect you need to keep it on lead when people/dogs are around.

If this had happened around my dog(never met a person she didn't love, or a dog she could tolerate), my dog would have snapped at her, in a manner scary to a young pup. That's why mine is only ever off lead when no other dog is around. If another dog unexpectedly arrived, my dog has excellent recall and will be back on lead before other dog can reach us

Well Hes way out of line threatening to kick your dog. There's no question about that.
However you know you're dog's friendly lovable and cheerful, but Other people don't. If a dog bounded up to me I'd shit myself. Regardless of its intentions. Maybe while Hes still learning keep him on a lead, until he gets into his obedience classes.
The last bloody thing you want is for him to knock an elderly man/lady over

Thanks everyone....glad I posted ...good to gave other peoples views to put things into perspective. This is why I love MN. Its a good advisory service. Certainly made me think again.

I agree with Lily! Good response OP. Must be horrid for someone to threaten your dog but beware. Some dogs are on leads as they are dog aggressive. And the law states dogs must be under control.

Omg you and your dog are the exact comnination that makes walking my very old and intolerant dog (these days) an absolute nightmare. I even walk him very late at night these days because no matter how careful l am to keep him away from other dogs (and l have 100% recall with him) there will always be one of the stupid 'but my dog is friendly' brigade to appear from round a corner with their dog charging 50 yards ahead of them.

as others have said in a public place where there are other dogs you really need to have him on a lead ,
i had a cairn terrier who hated all other dogs so he was always on a lead and if your loose dog had come bounding over to him your dog would probably have ended up at the vets with me getting the blame,
i wouldnt have threatened to kick your dog but would have told you in no uncertain terms that my dog was dog aggressive and please keep yours away from mine

YABU. You should have apologised, not hurled insults. Your dog was out of control because he didn't come back as soon as you called.
It's irrelevant that he was friendly and only wanted to play, you've got no idea what problems the other dog might have.
Keep him on a lead until trained.

YABU but you've already realised that.
A good solid recall will protect your dog against other people and dogs who might not want a puppy bouncing around them.
My dog is seriously dog aggressive and it's awful when dogs run up to play and he wants to eat them, I would rather kick a dog away with my foot than have my dog grab it (although mine is muzzled but I can see why the man would panic if his dog isn't nice!)

Lesson learned and advice taken on board....thanks everyone....will definately apologise when i see him again. Was just shocked by his aggression and retaliated in kind. Point taken.
