So, in Scotland where are you allowed to smoke?

NadineBaggott · 21/02/2007 16:09

I abhor smoking but they were in an open place so perfectly within their rights.

Report
nailpolish · 21/02/2007 16:09

you can smoke in the street or your own house

thats it

nadine - if its a bus shelter then they are not allowed to smoke there under the new law

So, what happens in scotland if someone does light up in a bus shelter? Do people say Oi! You cant do that? Or is it quietly ignored?

Now I like the odd roll up when not preg. I think I will find it difficult to go to a pub and not smoke, it's so much part of what I'm used to doing to relax and unwind. However, I hate it when people smoke around children, . We have a children's zoo near by, it's pretty well all open air, but people go round there smoking fgs. It's mostly the older generation, but it pisses me off that they can''t go for a few hours with out lighting up, especially round children.

they stand outside the bus shelter

its like speeding, you might get spotted by the police, you can take the risk or not

They may well have technically been within their rights, but common courtesy should prevail, and therefore they shouldn't have been smoking around others, especially children.

It always gets my goat, the non smoker is expected to move if they don't want to breathe in poisonous fumes. How is that fair??

I'm sorry but yes I do think you are being unreasonable.

I am an ex-smoker now (2 weeks woo-hoo) but as smokers cannot now smoke in bars/planes/trains/buses/cinemas/restaurants/offices

in fact anywhere so where do you draw the line, they have to smoke somewhere in the open.

I would have moved if it bothered me that much

i agree with mosschops and the elderly are more resistant to change

Nailpolish - my gripe with the smoking ban is that smoking is still allowed at outside tables and beer gardens etc. That means in the summer then all the smokers are out there and us non smokers either have to put up with the stench or sit inside. But you are right. It is otherwise absolutely fantastic and that on it's own is almost worth forgiving them for the zillions and trillions of pounds that they spent on the parliment. Oh and so too is the breastfeeding law!

Report
mosschops30 · 21/02/2007 16:50

not in wales, beer gardens are classes as enclosed spaces so there will be no smoking out there either

Report
nailpolish · 21/02/2007 16:51

yes the breastfeeding law is great

we go out for pub lunches all the time now, whereas we used to think twice and then not bother

i agree about the outside tables tho, you have to sit upwind

Mosschops nobody has to smoke.

and I am an ex smoker.

Report
nailpolish · 21/02/2007 16:53

if you want to smoke do it in your own house

the end

hospitals have now even decided to ban smoking in their grounds, and this includes people smoking in their own private cars

the staff who smoke are furious hehehe

Report
mosschops30 · 21/02/2007 16:57

colditz no-one has to smoke/drink/drugs/overeat but they do! and I just think that there should be somewhere smokers can smoke outside, if it had been in a park everyone would have said how disgusting it was, and rightly so as they are largely populated with children but at a bus stop?? Just cut em some slack ..... they'll be dead soon

Report
nailpolish · 21/02/2007 16:59

mossy, its ok to smoke at a bus stop, but if its a shelter (ie enclosed) then i think sitting next to a child and sparking up is not necessary

stand outside the shelter

Report
nailpolish · 21/02/2007 17:00

and i used to smoke

in fact having a fag whilst waiting for the bus used to be v enjoyable

but i didnt do it beside children

Report
mosschops30 · 21/02/2007 17:00

i agree np but the op says bus stop.

If it was a shelter def outside

Report
colditz · 21/02/2007 17:00

Moschops honest not patronising you at all.

but, I think you may have changed your mind when you have been quit longer. Atm it's still quite fresh in your mind.

I don't want my kids to see someone smoking any more than I want then to see someone jacking up. Both are deadly, just that one is taxable

Disgusting habit that should be by law confined to people's own homes. Sorry but why do smokers think that it's a given right to be able to do so in public spaces as though it doesn't matter that is physically and socially offensive to people who don't smoke

Report
nailpolish · 21/02/2007 17:02

yes she does say bus stop mossy, you are right, sorry

(but she also says "sat down" thats why i thought it was a shelter)
