AIBU?

To put my bin bags with my neighbours bins?

Today is first rubbish collection since Christmas so the council will take 2 additional bin bags along side standard grey rubbish bin.

We have very young twins and get no extra bin allowance, so it's one small grey bin which is collected every 2 weeks. The nappies alone fill this weekly.
I normally go to the top once a week with a bag but I've not been well.

We now have our bin on the kerb with 2 additional bin bags, but still have 2 extra bin bags.

Options are

  1. put them next to neighbours bin (they haven't put any extra bags out) they have already gone to work or I would have asked. I don't know my other neighbours.

  2. wait for my bin to be emptied then fill it straight back up and have no bin space for 2 more weeks

  3. ask the bin men very nicely

  4. just put them with mine (so 4 in total) and hope they don't mind

put them with your neighbours - what the eye doesn't see and all that!

I would put them with the neighbour's bin.

I really don't see the issue with it to be honest. If they were in then it is polite to ask if course

Oh good, I'm obviously over thinking it

Have you contacted your council? Surely you shouldn't have to go to the tip each week. We have big 240litre household rubbish bins that are collected weekly. Then alternative weeks for garden waste and recycling.

I'd put them with the neighbours. Only on mn have I ever seen anyone say this is a no go.

With two children in nappies you should be entitled to a larger bin. Ask your council for details.

YANBU but you should ask. We don't mind sharing bin space and we do but it's nice to be asked.

From the OP "We now have our bin on the kerb with 2 additional bin bags, but still have 2 extra bin bags."

It's just a question of leaving the extra 2 bags beside the neighbour's bin, not putting them in the neighbour's bin.

Neighbours are out anyway, just do it OP then ask for a bigger bin for yourself.

So the bins are being emptied today and the neighbours have already left for work?

If I understood it correctly then, yes, definitely put your extra bags next to their bin. They will never know and, even if somebody does tell them, it's not harmed or inconvenienced them in any way at all.

Asking the bin men nicely might work, but it also might not. It depends how strict the rules are in your area I imagine.

Put them next to, definitely not in.

Yes put with your neighbours. Worth checking with your council about separate nappy collections. Mine do a weekly yellow bag collection for nappies/incontinence pads etc but you have to request it. I used cloth nappies on my twins, they're not as much work as you might think. (Better than doing a tip run anyway)

Are you sure your not entitled to a bigger bin?

Our councils large bin criteria is 5+ people or 2 in nappies

  1. definitely. Put them in, if you can. Our black bin is only emptied every 4 weeks Shock and we missed the 1st one after Xmas. Grr.

Have you spoken to the council recently? With 2 in nappies you should have a larger bin.
Leave the extra bags next to the neighbours bin, they've used up the allowance they needed and have gone out. :)

Thank you did it and they were collected, yay!

Definitely not entitled to additional bin space or collections I've asked a number of times.
A larger family (5 person household of any ages) would be given a larger bin plus a blue bin bag which would be collected every other week. Seems crazy to me that a family with 3 children not in nappies need that much extra space than a family with two children in nappies.

Thanks a lot Grin

You might want to thank your neighbours for their (unbeknownst to them of course) support. They might hear from some other neighbour who watched you put the bags in their bin... you never know. A 'thank you' card, or however it's done. I don't like it when I find anonymous extra bags in my bin (does happen).

I'd do it (presumably you already have!) and then say to neighbours that you did so. They might offer any spare space they have to you on a regular basis

I wouldn't go out of my way to mention it - if my neighbour came round just to tell me they put their bag by my bin just before it was collected, I'd think she was a bit cookoo! However, if you mention it in passin, they might say it's no problem at all. I don't see the issue at all!

They were extra bags and I placed them sort of next to / near their bin but on the kerb which is public so not really on their land or their bin, just next to so the bin men were encouraged to think they came with their bin, iyswimWink

I think people need to understand that bins are the councils, they don't BELONG to each person/household. It's not 'their bin', so don't have any guilt about using them. It's probably best to ask when they are if you can use them in for neighbourly relations, people get so stupidly obsessive over bins Confused

I'd mention it in passing to neighbour, as I have met some elderly people (probably ageist but the ones I have spoken to are all 70+) who would be round there like a shot to tell them! Bin monitors.

Do you empty the nappies and flush the waste ? This takes up lots of space as well as being manky but many people just wrap and bin

Report
Aroundtheworldandback · 05/01/2017 11:32

Why don't you just speak to your neighbour?

If the ops twins are very young it's unlikely they form poo that could be flicked out
