I get ddog a giant rawhide bone each xmas and have never had any problems with them. I got one this year and he had started to chew it about 10mins ago and once the top layer was removed it looked like it was rotten and it smelled disgusting. Surely this isnt normal? Aibu to complain to pets at home?

YoScienceBitch Tue 03-Jan-17 17:50:43

I've heard you shouldn't give those to dogs anyway. They're full of poisonous chemicals.

StarsandSparkles Tue 03-Jan-17 17:54:22

He has never had any problems before and only gets the above bone each xmas

Weedsnseeds1 Tue 03-Jan-17 18:37:22

Sounds like it wasn't cured properly. Take it off the dog and return it for a refund.

Blackfellpony Tue 03-Jan-17 18:40:26

Get a refund and swap it for an antler- our dogs have one that's a month old and there isn't a mark on it yet grin

I phoned our local branch of pets at home and they said ive to take it back and it will be exchanged. As a pp said it must not of been properly cured as every other bone has been the same colour all the way through

I always bought these - rotty is 7-until saw an article about a husky eating one and it hadn't chewed it well enough, came apart in its stomach and shredded it's insides. We also have a husky so stopped buying them. I know small risk and huskies are good with bones as a rule but freaked me out.

Soubriquet Tue 03-Jan-17 19:56:02

What about stag bars?

I havent tried him with stag bars before. Do they work in the same way as rawhide that they are chewed down? Can the full thing be eaten?

Soubriquet Tue 03-Jan-17 20:32:14

Yep.

They just chew and chew

WeAllHaveWings Tue 03-Jan-17 20:35:34

try natural dried cows ears, dried tripe, lamb skin, whistle blowers (trachea), paddy whacks etc. They chew down and are eaten. They do stink a bit and can stain, so make sure they don't chew on your carpet.

We don't like stag bars as they are solid and can chip teeth if the dog bites down to hard. Last time our lab had one it developed a sharp piece which cut his mouth and it bled badly.

Sloegin2 Tue 03-Jan-17 20:37:32

Avoid rawhide.

My puppy loves paddywack (currently 3 for 2 in pets at home), pizzles, calves hooves and antlers as a chew treat.

Claireshh Tue 03-Jan-17 20:38:07

Oh bugger. My friend told me to buy these for my dog. She said they were great for dogs teeth. My own stupid fault for not reading up on them.

I also give him a deer antler to chew which he also loves.

BakeOffBiscuits Tue 03-Jan-17 20:40:48

My Jack Russell has raw hide bones almost everyday. I had no idea they were bad for them! she's 14 soon!
We did try an antler bone but she completely ignored ithmm

Badcat666 Tue 03-Jan-17 20:41:22

Beware of stag bars or antler chews, they can break dogs teeth or splinter in the mouth.

StarsandSparkles Tue 03-Jan-17 20:42:56

He also loves cows ears but doesnt get them as often as my local pet shop shut down and stirling is the nearest pets at home. He also gets bones from the butchers every now and again

Soubriquet Tue 03-Jan-17 20:43:12

try any of these too

My JRT used to love them

StarsandSparkles Tue 03-Jan-17 21:18:54

Thank you i will give those a try

Cherrysoup Tue 03-Jan-17 22:30:34

Zooplus and eBay do pig ears, pizzles. Mail order is a marvellous thing. Rawhide contains bleach and other horrible chemicals, plus is often made in China, which has a very poor reputation for animal food (and treatment!) Rawhide tends to glue itself together in the stomach, causing blockages.

We use this website which sends reliably good pig ears. Don't know if the discount code will work: CRUFTS2016 for 20% off.

Watch Rodney Habib's video on Facebook about how rawhide is made; it's basically the same as shoe leather, not food!

StarsandSparkles Tue 03-Jan-17 22:32:58

Ddog would be in heaven with 1000 pigs ears 😂

PoliticalBiscuit Tue 03-Jan-17 22:36:47

Stag bars are great they don't disintegrate they just wear down. Not all dogs like them and sometimes can give them a funny tummy but most do. If he doesn't take to chewing it try soaking it in water or giving it a quick sandpaper.

Bull horns are also great, you can get them pre filled. Cow hooves can be good but they do wear down quickly so I don't like to give him those unattended. Don't mind the odd rawhide but I know I'm taking a risk so it's not often. I'm really happy with stag antlers and bull horns though.

Also Kongs filled with xylitol free peanut butter or other treats like our dinner leftoves and a big Markie biscuit shoved in!
