Why smoke when you could Vape?

Returned home from friends house after party. Am tipsy and tired, kids will be up in a couple of hours but we can't sleep until we've had a quick shower as we stink of smoke.
Friend doesn't smoke in the house (apparently) but the house does smell of smoke and the furniture does.

Smokers at party (4 maybe 5 altogether I reckon) stand at back door to smoke but as it's freezing out and as everyone got more drunk towards end of night was more like stood in kitchen near an open door to smoke.

I'm not a smoker so don't understand the difference but some at party are 'exsmokers' who now Vape. They stayed indoors 'smocking' and I'm not certain but it seemed.less toxic to me. It didn't stink, smelt quite nice actually, kind of fruity.

Why.stand in the frozen outside or make your house stink or make non smoking guests stink when you could Vape??

Not meaning to be a twat by the way. Maybe there's a big difference I just don't get but I love my friend. Love her company. Hate the fear of what cigarettes may be doing to her health and on a selfish note hate having to shower as soon as I get back from her house every visit

So as I asked, why smoke (known to be really bad health wise, bad for skin, bad for kids to be around, nothing good about it and it stinks) when you could Vape?

Aren't they the same sort of thing?

Couldn't someone convince my lovely smokey friend to be a lovely vapey friend instead please

In my experience smoking and vaping are totally different. They feel different. I have tried to switch to vaping a few times but it just doesn't feel the same. It doesn't lower my stress levels. It doesn't give me the same buzz that a cigarette does. It doesn't get rid of the craving. I have many friends who vape while sober but once they start drinking they smoke. I have other friends who constantly have their ecig in their mouths. My home is completely smoke free though. No vaping or smoking inside. If you want to smoke or vape it's outside with the door closed behind you. It's my decision to smoke and I wouldn't force anyone who doesn't to suffer through my choices

I posted on another thread earlier saying a similar thing - I'm a smoker, I've tried vaping but it doesn't taste the same and I get a lot of satisfaction from actually watching a cigarette burn down which an e-cig can't do. e-cigs are great for a lot of people but they really aren't the same as actually smoking.

It's addiction. We know we stink of smoke, we know it's killing us, we do it regardless.

Me and DH smoked from the ages of around 15 to our early 20s. I quit for around 7 years cold turkey but started smoking again about 18 months ago and then quit again in March when I fell pregnant. Husband quit smoking around 3 years ago, started smoking again about 6 months ago.
When he quit he used a vap pipe, he got so addicted to it, it was permantly in his hand. I think it was the fear of smoking again maybe? When he vaped he had an awful cough and woke several times in the night. Now I'm not saying cigarettes are better for you by any means but no one knows for sure what's in the vap liquid and the bottles have a toxic symbol on them!

They are just not the same as smoking though, it doesn't take the craving away and the feeling isn't the same. I think a lot of people are vaping now as a fashion thing instead of a stopping smoking tool.

They have a toxic symbol on because they contain nicotine. If you make your own or buy from a reputable supplier they generally have 4 ingredients

I don't see the attraction of vaping. I imagine I'd say the same of cigarettes if I was a mature adult making that decision. Why chose to inhale vapour that smells fruity? Smoking for many is a thing picked up when too young and stupid to know better. I've seen young people today vaping. Is it the same thing?

I'm using it as a nicotine replacement. Some don't have nicotine in, some do
I like dessert flavours and it keeps me off cigarettes

Equally I hate that smokers go outside. Great that your house doesn't reek, but now mine does as your neighbour. Thanks.

DH vapes. He's like the bloody Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland. It's constant and it's a really massive, expensive vape machine thing. It drives me mad.

I'm a (currently on) off and on smoker and I gave vaping a good go but just don't find it as satisfying. DH agrees, as does SIL and FIL, all back on fags.

Also, while your friend may let people vape inside, the pubs and clubs here boot them outside with us grubby smokers anyway.Grin

People shouldn't be vaping inside anymore than smoking. Both are not nice in an enclosed environment. I predict that vaping will be the new health risk soon with some early evidence of popcorn lung. Its very early days so no one knows if it has long term effects. Certainly less than smoking.

I started vaping last Thursday and I haven't had a cigarette since!
Maybe I'm just lucky in choosing one that feels and tastes the same as a cig!
I'm away for the New Year and I have my cigs with me but I just don't want them!

Popcorn lung was linked to the cig a likes type, not the new style. And also to a specific ingredient which now isn't in e liquid

Because vaping is still smoking.

Still stinks. Still ruins your skin. Probably still as dangerous.

And you have the indignity of looking like you're about to play a little tune...

Early days to know long term damage, they may be, they may not be. Its unknown at the moment.

Or you could just stop all together.

hollinhurst84 · 31/12/2016 08:44

It doesn't ruin your skin Confused it's nicotine not smoke. It's like sticking a nicotine patch on, it's not smoking

But you're still doing the sucking motion which causes wrinkles.

londonrach - but it's better than smoking, and 95% safer so massive harm reduction. The constant nag of people complaining about vaping (nobody complained when I smoked) isn't encouraging people to carry on vaping, it will drive them back to smoking. Which people complain about
It's swapping a habit people know kills people for one that's 95% safer - and for people who are really struggling to quit smoking that is never a bad thing

That depends on how you vape really, I use a fairly large mouth piece so it's not a narrow draw like a cigarette

I have been vaping for three years. I love it. I don't stink. I haven't had a cold or chest infection. Odd sniffle. And it's just as satisfying. Best move I ever made.

No idea OP.

I'm a evangelical vaper.

I think most people who don't get on with it make the rookie error of buying something that's too cheap/weak to get a proper hit off.

I wish I'd got a vape ages ago. I was a smoker on and off from my teens to my 30s so almost 20 years and tried the nicotine lozenges and gum but always failed and went back to fags. Started vaping about 4 months ago and haven't touched tobacco since and no desire to either. I'm chuffed with the money I've saved from not buying fags.

Vaping is the only thing that stopped me smoking three years ago after twenty four years of smoking. I was at the point where I thought I would probably smoke for the rest of my life and felt hideously down about it.

You do need a good kit though. And to persevere for the first two weeks. I had my vape in my hand permanently for that fortnight. You also need to figure out your vape flavours, get the right concentration of nicotine and find a brand of good liquids. Some of the cheap ones are horrendous.

These days, the kits you can buy are so efficient that your liquids can have a lot less nicotine in them. I'm now below 10mls and have noticed that I can go without a vape for a long time. It's worked like a very slow wean away from smoking.

I can now see a time, possibly in the next two years, when I don't even vape. I think that's a win.

I gave up smoking via vaping and it isn't the same thing. Haven't smoked for around 3 years now and haven't vaped for around 18 months. I miss cigarettes (not enough to take it up again) but not vaping I think because it was never really part of my identity in the same way smoking was.

If you have never smoked it is quite difficult to understand why people continue to do it seemingly in the face of all reason. yes nicotine is addictive but smoking is much more than just nicotine. For a long time being a smoker was part of being me, it gave me time in the day to sit somewhere quiet with my thoughts, it got me talking to loads of people outside pubs, lectures, work etc that I wouldn't have chatted to otherwise, my speech patterns were different because I would talk and exhale smoke, I gestured differently because of having a cigarette in my hand, my leaving the house routine was different; loads of stuff that isn't significant but is all behaviour that has to change as a result of not smoking and it feels alien. Vaping replaces that to a point but the rituals are different so it is still a different set of behaviours.

I also think I miss smoking because I smoked throughout my 20s which was a time when I want out all the time with my friends, was thin, beautiful and had very little responsibility and my brain associates that time with smoking a cigarette. A lot of cigarette smoking is associated with positive life experiences, relaxing at home, being in the pub, having a laugh on a break.
