AIBU?

AIBU to have lost my temper over a kebab?

Since it's nearly new year I decided to spend the last two days of 2016 eating and went heading off to the village chip shop for a great greasy kebab. I know they are gross.

However seriously - I had a really uncomfortable exchange!

I went in and asked really nicely for a kebab and the lady serving went duly trotting off for me. Another younger woman was there serving and said 'oh we don't have any kebab meat' I was confused, as the other woman had already asked me if I wanted salad no just cover it in mayo and chilli sauce so hesitated and she then said 'only joking (Hmm) but do you not want chips?' I politely smiled and said no, that was ok. Then the following conversation happened.

Her - go on, have chips
Me - oh honestly it's fine thanks
Her - you can't come in a chip shop and not have chips
Me - it's fine honestly
Her - there's a little old lady peeling potatoes in the back for chips and no one wants them, go on
Me - oh I am sure they will, this kebab is enough for me!
Her - are you SURE you don't want chips? Go on ...
Me - (edge to my voice now) it's fine honestly

I tried to move away a bit but then the lady getting my kebab came over and the younger woman said 'she doesn't want chips, I've told her to have some.' I was really fed up now and I said (smiling but edge) 'yes okay... that's enough now.'
THEN she said 'do you want a sausage?' The woman getting my kebab said 'you're annoying her now' to the younger woman. I said firmly (trying to be a good assertive MNetter) 'you're not annoying me but this is starting to make me feel uncomfortable.'

Dead silence.

So AIBU to be 'wtf' and to never go in that chip shop again ...

She's projecting. She wanted chips.

But yes, I'd avoid that shop from now on.

How tiresome that would have annoyed me too

It was REALLY annoying.

I might have wanted chips IF I wasn't having a kebab! I am a lardy cow but even I can't manage both.

It's bloody odd behaviour certainly, I wouldn't blame you if you never went there again.

Perhaps you could play them at their own game though? eg.
Her: That's £9.80 please
You: You want me to pay?
Her: Yes, 9.80 please.
You: What, pay you now?
Her: Yes, 9.80, please.
You: Who do I give the money to?
Her: ME.
You: How much was it again?

And so on, until you're thrown out of the shop.

She was probably just trying to have a bit of humour with you. Hope the kebab was nice.

It's possible she's new and needs to learn that upselling is a subtle art and is very different to badgering the crap out of customers til they give in to shut you up. Not sure it would make me uncomfortable enough to stop going there if the food and prices are good, but I wouldn't hesitate to go in next time, order what I wanted and shut her down straight away - "I'd like a large kebab with salad and garlic sauce please - no drinks, chips, sausages, fish or anything else. How much please?"

Wait at the opposite end of the counter.

Why was the old lady peeling potatoes if no one wanted chips??

Sorry op but this thread has made me smile thinking of the wonderful Mrs Doyle.

My answer would be a firm 'no thank you' with eye contact, and if she persisted I would ask for my money back and go elsewhere. You weren't aggressive OP, she was. She sounds like someone who has been told to upsell but doesn't realise persistent aggressive techniques don't work in a kebab shop. Asking you if you want chips is fine. Asking you again and again and again if you want chips and then turning on the guilt with the little old lady in the back (total bollocks by the way) is over the top.

Is there anywhere else you can go to for your kebab? (not that you'll be needing it in the new year Wink )

I always thought chip shops had potato peeling machines? Is it really a little old lady doing them?

I don't want to be the one that jumps in with 'she might have a hidden disability' etc but the assistant in my local chip shop does have learning difficulties and his only job is chips and he does get a bit concerned if you don't want chips.
