AIBU to want to take my own food to the cinema?

I suspect I am. But We are going to the cinema around lunchtime and I will be hungry. I don't like nachos, popcorn or hotdogs or anything else like to be on offer and I have a fridge full of lovely things left from Christmas.

Am I wrong to be tempted to smuggle in a cheese and pickle sarnie?

Do you need to eat in what is only a 2 hour stretch though. You can eat before or after?

If not the cinema staff will never know you have a sandwich in there.

I always do - in the past I've taken popcorn, a flask of coffee, sweets, carrots , my own drinks and even once a sandwich! (Not all at the same time! They are so overpriced.

To be fair a sandwich would be less noisy and smelly than the overpriced crap that the cinema wants to sell to you.

Odeon have allowed you to take your own food in for a long time now. Cineworld only recently have allowed it. If it's another chain, then they may have a policy of no food unless purchased here. No cinema can legally stop you; they can ask you not to though.

YANBU in the sense that the food at the cinema is overpriced and also rubbish, however I was once told that the cinemas often get zero of the ticket price for the movie as this all goes back to the studios for the popular films (eg Star Wars). The first film this happened with was Jurassic Park so quite a while ago. In that sense the cinemas are NBU in charging high prices for gross nachos etc as they have to make their profits somewhere.

Yanbu to want it but they are not being unreasonable to set their own rules in their own private property so if they reserve the right to chuck you out. If they discover your turkey and stuffing sarnies half way through Rogue One you are not allowed to moan, just say "it's a fair cop guv" and leave quietly. If you don't get caught then all is well.

I always smuggle in my own food and drink. I'm not keen on fizzy drinks.

Last time I smuggled in a WKD Blue. The time before that it was a pint of milk. Once I took a thermos of cocoa.

My cinema snack is always chocolate covered pretzels. No exception.

I confess I did it when DH and I went to the cinema for the first time in literally years. We had 3-4 lean months this year (both freelancers) and the babysitting meant we could not do dinner as well. So i made us cheese, pickle and tomato sandwiches. I even wrapped them in plastic wrap not foil so it would not rustle.

I'd do it again. But I felt a bit embarrassed!

Yanbu. I never buy anything from the cinema. We just go the discount store which is close by. The exact same packet of maltesers that are £1 in the shop, are £3 in the cinema. It's disgraceful.

I've seen psychology papers about this. Basically if you are engaging emotionally with the film, your hormones and instincts are telling you to "do something" about whatever tense situation is on screen. Obviously our conscious mind knows it is just a story and knows not to leap into action but our subconscious is still a bit stressed. Eating soothes that stress and makes the subconscious feel that everything is under control.

If I've gone straight from work and it's a long film or a NT performance (always long) I have occasionally had a Mac cheese in there, too.

As others have said, why no just wait the two hours that the film lasts without eating?

People troughing and chomping through a film is why I rarely go to the cinema. I respect their right to do it but it is hugely irritating and ruins the film for me.

Take your own! Our local cinema has a mini Tesco next door and it's main trade is in cinema snacks. 🍫🍬🌭🍭
