I just read that Victoria Beckham is to receive an OBE for service to Fashion- which makes me wonder how great British designers like Georgina Chapman and lots more notable ones have been overlooked all these years. (Of course I stand to be corrected)!

I don't know how she got it and I agree so many others who are overlooked. Her charity work I read today is being recognised...

I was surprised at this as well - most of her clothes look akin to a potato sack in terms of their fit. Awful.

Not sure on the point about the charity work. Has she done a lot? Genuinely not sure.

I was a bit Confused when I read it. There must be stuff we don't know about.

She is also getting it for the charity work she does so it's not just down to fashion.

You have to be nominated then go through a panel of approvals. So in theory you can nominate anyone, for anything, but the Cabinet Office (or other government department depending on why someone is nominated) does a check to make sure they should get the award and there are no skeletons. Eg a teacher being nominated will be vetted by the DfE, a nurse by DH, etc, to make sure they are not banned from their profession.

So who nominated VB I wonder?

I'm baffled by this as well.

I understood her status as a 'designer' to be mainly a loss making vanity project funded by her husband.

I suspect some strings being pulled somewhere there.

DH is convinced DB will be knighted soon. Confused

You're not serious GrinGrin.

I like the Beckhams and think she's ok but I draw the line at her being given an honour like this, Simon Fuller's done a good job, give him the broach instead.

The whole thing has become a joke.

The requirements seem to be just celebrity status Hmm

Of course David's in line for a K and i wouldn't knock him for receiving one, I like him .

VB as a fashion designer is laughable , she's the face of a brand and does the talking.

I am thinking wistfully of the days when the New Year's Honours list was released on NYD and no recipient broke ranks beforehand #old

I don't care for the whole brand Beckham thing, and now the children are being dragged into it as well it just gets worse.

Blacksox · 28/12/2016 18:05

It's all a bit of a joke. Who on earth makes the decision?

I hate all the peddling of their children - aren't the 2 of them famous enough?

DB worthy of consideration for footballing career genius.

VB I have grown to acknowledge like.

I agree with you about the daft song from Cruz, Parents should have said ' give over lad' , money and privilege don't apply, obviously.

Appears the selection process is the Queen buys a copy of Hello magazine, closes her eyes, stabs her fountain pen on a page and hey Preston the pen stabbed person gets a gong.

I've nominated someone who's served her community for many years and deserves it, the nomination went forward to be vetted by the appropriate government department, assuming it passed (they don't tell you) it will have gone forward on the official list for that government department for approval by the cabinet office, they do background checks etc. and if the nomination is approved at that stage it's on the long list, a committee then gets the long list down to the final list.

Anyone can nominate, I assume "famous" people are nominated by their PR people.

It really is a mystery how she even parades around as a 'Fashion Designer'.
Note: Never shows at Paris or Milan. A complete joke to be honest.

Obviously she pays for fluff pieces in the Daily Mail, but I don't see any evidence of her being actually taken seriously anywhere?

Actually I think she's quite talented as a designer, and fair play to her, she's not faking it, whether we like the designs or not. However I was also surprised about the OBE as was my daughter. Victoria is a relatively new designer so something very weird about this award.🙄

Having attended an investiture, I think you'll find that the press widely publicise the awards given to celebs but not those given to people who are not in the public eye. There were lots of people there who were doing difficult or dangerous jobs and doing them well, serving their communities and so on. Other than the people I went with, I'd not previously heard of anyone there.

I disagree. He was an average footballer and a bad sport (remember the 98 World Cup? Think it was that one).

Anyway, the honours system is a joke. This just confirms it.
