AIBU?

One more day...

I've managed 6 out of 7 days at the PILs over Christmas - HELP ME get through one more day. Here are my main current complaints (there are many).

I'm up late again as the bed is so uncomfortable I'm having trouble sleeping. The mattress feels like a bouncy castle and I hate the square pillows and the bolster is too high. Have just scavenged some cushions from the living room. Bloody DP is snoring away beside me.

Why does anyone buy Pink toilet paper - yuck!!! How can you see easily if something is amiss? Sorry for TMI but am 6+4 wks with dc2 so am very worried that something could still go wrong.

They had an absolutely massive platter of oysters as in more than a dozen each. Plus prawns and some sort of sea snail at Christmas eve Lunch and spent the entire meal saying how sorry they were that I couldn't eat it! They weren't that bloody sorry to eat something else. We had Lobster for dinner so it wasn't like there wasn't a seafood treat ahead.

We haven't played a single board or card game, I haven't seen any trashy Christmas films. I haven't eaten a mince pie since I left the Island. AIBU?

They don't sound as if they've done anything remotely terrible.

Maybe you'd just be happier back in your own home (totally understandable)? Xmas Smile

No you're right I'm just moaning, my relationship is strained with PIL at the best of times. We're civil, I just find it don't have much in common with them. Honestly I think I'm just a bit bored and feel like I haven't really started celebrating Christmas yet.

Yes I think YABU, unless you've specifically stated that you'd like certain foods or made an effort to bring some with you - including your choice of 'un-yukky' toilet paper (which btw, will still show if something is amiss).

Not everyone's Christmas involves playing games or watching trashy Christmas films (although mine does).

It's a case of each to their own really.

Yeah sorry OP I kept reading waiting for the bit where they would turn into the devil but it never came. You just have different tastes to them (the loo roll thing is particularly OTT). I miss my bed and my own home.when I stay anywhere so I do understand where you are coming from but I don't think you can really vilify the PILs for that.

Yes yabu. Re the seafood, I expect they'd planned the food before you knew you were pregnant as you can only have known a fortnight or so.

I thought this was going to be about Les Mis.

Pink paper has been a 'thing' as long as coloured toilet paper has, yes.

Pink, blue, cream, peach are quite run of the mill colours aren't they? Confused

I don't even look at the colour of bog roll before I grab it off the supermarket shelf, I just look at the brand/price.

I'm being precious with the oysters, it was just an absolute table full. It was me who suggested the oysters in the first place but with dc2 on the way decided not to have any.

Another winge, they bought me some sparkling apple juice so I could have something in my glass when they are doing a champagne toast - Nice. I suggested me and DS have some with dinner, oh no we're having bubbles with dessert, you can't have it now. It's just little things like this, soooooooo annoying.

OK you definitely can't complain about the oysters if you suggested them...

Maybe it's the bed?

I always feel more grouchy and inclined to get more irritated by trivial things when I'm sleep deprived.

I would have stuck to my guns with the apple juice and drunk it with the main. IMO Champagne should be drunk as an aperitif not with dessert. It isn't a sweet wine and tastes like vinegar once you have eaten something sweet.

Well if such trivial things are 'sooooooo annoying', why do you even leave your own home for Christmas?

Sorry but you sound really hard to please, OP.

And you're being precious about more than just the oysters imo.

I just need to moan, I've been here 6 days. I find MIL overbearing, all the time. I know I aibu re the oysters but it was my suggestion in the first place and they went and bought them after we told them. I have to keep re-explaining why I can't eat certain things. It's tedious. It's just the sort of thing my family would never do, they'd be flexible.

But you're not staying with your family are you?

That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the way your inlaws do things, they're just different.

They bought the sparkling apple juice for the toast. There's nothing wrong with them wanting to save it for the toast.

Yeah, I suggested the oysters before I knew I was pregnant. Who sits infront of a pregnant women with 40 oysters saying oh sooooooo sorry you can't have any. It was comical.

And seriously who can spend 7 days at PIL without going a bit loopy. I must have been mad when I agreed to the booking!!

I suspect that after a week when you leave the relief will be mutual.

Did they not serve you an alternative for lunch? They just left you without any food at all?

Ha I don't doubt that.

Oh no, they're not monsters, my DH cooked us scallops instead. It was how much they laid it on... and I'm think if you're that sorry you could have eaten something else. It's a general complaint on how inflexible I find them. For example when other DSIL is here too they are at great pains to give her vegetarian options. It just rubs me the wrong way.

If you find MIL overbearing and agreed to such a long visit in a moment of madness, why did you not make plans to mitigate this? Slow of thinking there.
And they sound quite keen to please tbh

Actually you are being strange to ask everyone to eat something else just because you are pregnant.

Report
fibrecruncher · 27/12/2016 00:20

I wasn't saying goes they should eat something else, it was just how terribly sorry they were that I couldn't eat it. I mean they kept saying it. If you're that sorry why eat it at a meal with me?

I can't say I'm that serious about the pink loo roll but it's just a bit naff isn't it?

SloanyAnne - I agreed with DH just now that we have to do shorter trips in future. I think it's because we spent the afternoon with friends that when we got back I needed to vent how trying I'm finding this trip.
