AIBU?

AIBU to have pushed in front of the front at the customer service desk?

I had an opticians appointment and had to go and wear the contact lenses for a while so decided to pick up some last minute gifts.

When I got back to the opticians, I released that I didn't have my handbag. My optician said to go and look for it but he was leaving in an hour and I need these lenses for my holiday.

The traffic was so heavy and I had 7 shops to check in an hour plus the traffic.

When I got to customer services, all I wanted to know was whether they had my bag. The qs were miles long and so I went to the front, apologised and asked if they had my bag. Some staff ignored me and other shoppers were swearing at me. I was in tears. My bag had £300.00 in and all my credit cards plus things like my address book.

I finally found my bag at asda (4th shop) and got back with literally minutes to spare.

BUT was IBU to push in for something so important?

Please be gentle with me. Confused

No not at all, something like that time is not on your side.

Sorry people were horrible to you it says much more about them than you people can be horrible at this time of the year.

I don't think so. I can understand why people were cross at you but at the end of the day if you had all your cards in etc you'd need to know quickly because if it wasn't there /anywhere else you'd want to phone the bank. Ywnbu but I can see why people were cross

YANBU glad you found it

Would you not have been quicker phoning the customer service desk for each shop?

How stressful, but yes you probably WBU. Other people in the queue may have been waiting for something that was as important to them as your bag was to you.

No you weren't. Combined with the stress of the money and the lenses...that was very worrying.

Forget it...I'm glad you found it.x

I don't think you were unreasonable. I can't imagine feeling anything other than sorry for someone who'd lost a handbag so close to Christmas. Other customers swearing at you were completely unreasonable.

Yanbu and whilst I'd have been passed off at you pushing in if I'd known the reason I'd have insisted you go to the front.

However why didn't you just call the stores? They usually have to answer the phones within a certain length of time and so you'd bypass the need to queue/push in.

If I was in the queue and heard what your dilemma was, I would have been OK to wait an extra couple of minutes while the staff checked if they had your bag

I doubt it agent , being overcharged on your sprouts or your reserved Turkey order not materialising are not the same as a lost bag.

DJBaggySmalls · 24/12/2016 10:53

No, but its a good idea to be very flustered and blurt 'I've lost my handbag' for the sympathy of the queue.
Glad you found it Smile

Glad you got your bag back, OP, and also glad that you got your lenses in time.

Yanbu and whilst I'd have been passed off at you pushing in if I'd known the reason I'd have insisted you go to the front.

This. People in the queues could well have been stressed and in a rush themselves, especially at this time of year, so don't take it personally. Hope you have a great holiday.

Sorry but yes. Unless you triaged everyone in front of you to check they didn't have anything similarly important. If you'd lost your child, maybe, but not a handbag.
If I'd been in the queue and you'd explained I would have let you in front of me but if you'd just pushed in I would not have been happy.

You were upset and panicking, so your actions were understandable; but I don't think you can blame people in the queue for being cross (although swearing at someone is rude in any circumstances) because you don't know how urgent their own situations might have been - some might also have been trying to meet a deadline, or even have been in quest of lost property themselves.

Not unreasonable - if the queue knew why you were there they should have insisted you go to the front.

Your reserved Turkey order not materialising... not the same as a lost bag

Hmm I'm not sure on this one. I'd be pretty pissed off and stressed out if the shop had fucked up my order and if I'd been queuing for ages I wouldn't be impressed if someone thinks they can shove their way to the front because they lost something through their own carelessness.

Yes you were unreasonable. I can understand why you did what you did considering the day you were having, but from the point of view of everyone else who was politely queuing you would just appear to be a typical "me first, fuck the rest of you" type of person.

You made a judgement call that your need was greater than those of the people who were queuing, and understandably some of them took exception to this. When you go against social conventions, such as jumping the queue, you have to expect a verbal backlash.

The problem is that if your need is greater than everyone else in the queue, what is there to stop someone else considering that their need is even greater than yours? And someone else thinking their need is even more important than that? The whole point of the queue is that everyone is treated fairly, first come first served. It's not the strongest or the loudest who always forces themselves to the front.

How would you feel if you were having the exact same shit day but you had decided to queue after all. After waiting and worrying for half an hour, you were nearly at the front when someone pushed in front of you? Would you think that's fair enough because they were in a rush, or would you be pissed off that someone decided that they were too important to wait in line as you had done?

Like I've said, I understand why you did what you did, but you made a choice: push in, and take the flak.

Maybe theirs was as important but not as urgent! I would definitely have let you go ahead (even insisted!) People who swear shut all conversation down. Had they said "excuse me, why are you jumping the queue?" Then you could have explained and, hopefully they would have been happy to let you through. Not to mention they would feel good!

I think if you explained to people as you went to the front it's fine. If I'd have been in the queue I'd have been encouraging you to the front in that circumstance, I know the gripping panic of losing something like that.

I highly doubt the queues were full of people whom all had to locate a VERY important lost item. YANBU. Swearing was uncalled for. Season of goodwill eh?

Wow returning a toaster is hardly the same as losing a handbag. I really wouldn't worry about reasonableness or otherwise op, you found it and that is the important thing Smile

I think YWBU I'm afraid, though the circumstances make it completely understandable.

In your situation I'd have explained the situation to the person at the front of the queue loudly enough that a few behind could hear and then ask if you could push in, saying you'd only be a minute. Or I'd ring the stores instead.

The way you went about it, you made the assumption that your situation was more important than everyone else's in the queue. Bear in mind what day it is...it's likely that everyone in that queue felt their issue was important. It's also likely they were pretty stressed.
