classic artists should not be diluted by being played in supermarkets

the clash in morrisons last month is one example Angry

Your dh is an arse of the highest order, Sergeant Pepper is a true classic.

It's M&S, I'm afraid. Classics are usually good and stand the test of time, The Beatles are old pap now and even the authenticity of them as song writers is questionable now.

gilly. Evidence please? That's some assertion! 'Old pap'?

Oh bugger: I took the bait

Never really found them to be anything other than a bit bland tbh. McCartney is mediocre at best.

I'd have thought the Beatles were the perfect background music.

Is Sgt Pepper really a classic? Mind you classics don't need to be actually good.

tiger

I saw it on a BBC documentary, they all sat around getting stoned with loads of other recording artists, just who contributed what on which songs is not known. It said George Martin contributed bits himself, as did many of the hangers on of the time
Thought most people interested in 20th century music knew about it, never heard anyone surprised before.

I play SP to the kids as I feel it's a nursery rhyme album. A good one though. I prefer Revolver.

DavidPuddy · 23/12/2016 23:31

Agree with Random that Revolver is superior.

Is Sgt Pepper really a classic?

I think so, because of how different it was when it first came out, and its influence. As you say, that doesn't mean everyone thinks it's good.

Ffs Seargent Pepper was so ahead of its time. It's an absolute classic. Anyone wh can't see that just doesn't know their music history. And therefore their opinion is not worth listening to.

So there! 😀

Plus people are talking about it 50 years after it was released. That sort of longevity suggests it's a classic, too.

Report
Idiotxit · 24/12/2016 02:26

It's both, depends on the listener. Do people rave about it because it's iconic or because it's fabulous on it's own, modern-day terms?

I like some of it, not all. I also think Revolver is better, but I'm not exactly a die-hard Beatles fan.

Tomorrow Never Knows was ahead of its time. Samples, backwards tape tricks and breakbeat. In 1966. :o

Can't bear the Beatles. Load of old dirge. Some of their better songs survive through remakes.

Even my parents who loved the Beatles in their day agree now that they are bland shite!

So far as being ahead of its time Rolling Stone magazine had this to say about it. "Them" being The Beach Boys.

The Beatles made a point of echoing them on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band – an acknowledgment that Pet Sounds was the inspiration for the Beatles' masterpiece

I don't buy into this idea that there was nothing experimental in contemporary popular music before The Beatles made Sgt Pepper.

Would also point out that The Beach Boys sonic experiments were made by Brian Wilson - an actual member of the Beach Boys and a top notch producer unlike The Beatles who relied on George Martin.

There is nothing on Sgt Pepper which comes close to God Only Knows or Good Vibrations (not on Pet Sounds but released in 1966 before Sgt.Pepper)
