Our neighbours across the street have 3 young kids and I think they are really struggling financially. The last couple of months there has been a soup van from Salvation Army outside their house.
I don't know them very well as they seem to keep to themselves but with Christmas coming I was thinking of wrapping up some presents and putting them by their door.
I bought 6 presents (2 each), wrapped them and put a sticky note describing what was inside so that the parents can decide who gets what.
It is now midnight (Australia) and I am thinking of sneaking across. My Dh thinks that it's not a good idea and they could be really offended.

I would say it's from 'your neighbours at number 2' or whatever. I would be wary of giving my children a parcel from an unknown person. You sound lovely btw. What a kind thing to do.

Do it. Brief cover note saying 'please do with these as you see fit' (just in case the soup van is there because they are big in the salvation army volunteer scene not struggling themselves) and yeah do it discretely.

Ohhh thanks everyone for your kind words! You made me teary.
My sister and I just walked the presents over and put them on the side of the door by the car... and quickly ran back.
We are now sitting outside having a wine (32 degrees today and hot!) and have dubbed ourselves the Christmas Ninjas. Might have to do this every Year.

When I was growing up we never had much money. I can remember one year an aunt left loads of bags of shopping filled with lovely things on the doorstep (she knew my dad would be too stubborn to accept face to face).

Pretty much made our Christmas.

I agree with Vladimirs. You're well intentioned but they will probably be horribly embarrassed and may feel ashamed that someone has noticed. And also they may well feel upset that someone is watching them to the extent they've worked out their private financial affairs.

Plus, how do you know that the van is not parked out there because one of them is volunteering? Those vans are normally for street homeless people rather than families. I think it would be pretty odd if they were delivering to families that way as they normally have the sense to be discreet.
