Dd9 and her f***ing brace!

So fucking cross with dd9

She has had a retainer brace since march, first one has had about 4 weeks then while on holiday she took it out at dinner in restaurant wrapped in napkin and left on table... of cause when we went back when we realised it had been binned! So I had to pay for replacement.

So today she has just come to me saying she doesn't know where it is, retraced her steps and asked her if she took it out when eating chocolate in town and if so what did she do with it... of course she put in coat pocket! The same coat that's on her bedroom floor and of course she has had friend over and the coat has been trod on and the retainer is now broke in two!

Yesterday morning I woke up and found the fucking thing in bed with me!

She is a nightmare, just abandons shoes, coats, toys where ever.

Her teeth really do need early intervention to hopefully prevent very intense treatment when older but she just doesn't seem to be able to grasp the importance

And I can bloody afford to replace again Sad

I really just need to rant

I was exactly like this at 10 - I hated my retainer. After a couple of losses and breakages we went straight to "train tracks" and everyone (including me) was a lot happier.

I got through glasses like nobodies business too. Blush

She is 9, they forget things. You or her dad should have been reminding her to pick it up before you left the dinner table.

It not that she doesn't like it more that she is just a f-ing nightmare and away with the fairies most the time!

Train tracks seem a long way off she has so many issues going on, cross bites, over crowding etc

She should leave it in to eat but doesn't then forgets to put it back in..... JUST LEAVE IT IN YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!!!!

Had I of known she took it out I would of taken it as in my handbag I had a case for it as we were on holiday! I just wasn't aware she took it out and screwed in a paper napkin as we were trying to encourage her to eat with it in. Like she has a case for in in your school tray, school bag, upstairs in bathroom, in the kitchen etc yet I still nearly bin it regularly when I empty her lunch box

Umm, have you ever tried eating with a retainer in? I can remember how awful that was to do and we are talking about 35 years ago now. Can you get her a retainer case to put it in?

She is very young to have one. My daughter could have had one at 9 but the ortho made her wait until 12 because she said it's a lot to remember at 9. Is there a special reason she has one so young?

Any chance she has a problem with her concentration? You say she's away with the fairies...

Ah she is very young still. My dd has one at 12 and has to be fair been pretty good with it. But we did nearly lose it wrapped in a napkin in a restaurant too.

I would just make sure she always always has her case with her. And if it isn't in her mouth it is in her case in her pocket. Also put your phone number on the case as a back up.

I was also going to say it is a lot to ask at 9. Does she have a box to store it in? Ds had several dotted about so he always had somewhere safe to put his brace.

I had train tracks and a retainer. I was 11. It was fucking hideous. Cut her some slack- she is 9.

9 is very young. And eating with a retainer is horrible

If you know she forgets then you need to be reminding her.

She has about 10 cases seriously I brought her two when we got the brace one for home and one for school and her step mum who is a dental nurse got her loads of different Ines in very colour so we have loads of them.

I know she is young and I didn't think she works get one so young but it's because of how bad they are!

I am prob being to hard but just frustrated that I have to fill out for another as she is always leaving it lying about

Awww I had one in my teens and it was awful. I did what she did and my mother eventually gave up lol. So glad she did as I have all four wisdom teeth fully through and they had room to do so so all my unfinished gaps filled in! Grin

What have you done to help her? Maybe a special case to keep it in while eating? At 9 she needs a system to help her manage it.

Ankleswingers · 21/12/2016 15:40

They are the most uncomfortable fuckers. Seriously. I appreciate it must be frustrating for you but you just have to persevere and keep reminding her.

I really feel for your DD. They are hideous.

Do you mind me asking how much they cost?

Report
HarleyQuinzel · 21/12/2016 16:04

They really do hurt. They made me bleed so I stopped wearing it. My teeth have only moved back slightly if that's any help, although I do wish I'd worn it now.

If you do replace it I would just get her to wear it at night. It will be more uncomfortable at first but better than losing/breaking it again. And never make her eat with it in again! I'd rather not eat.

lightswitchedoff · 21/12/2016 19:45

3luckystars I can't remember exactly but around £70-80, if they get lost/broke you have to pay to replace.

I do remind her, always saying where's your brace/ is your brace in/ put it in etc but I am not with her all the time at school etc

Just wearing at night isn't a option, she has to wear 24 hours a day and the orthodontist said she should eat with it in to be she hates that, so I don't mind her taking it out to eat but it's just she really just dumps it anywhere I.e I found it in my bed the other morning when I woke or find in in her lunchbox under all her rubbish and she has boxes... she has 10 of them.

Because of the problems she will be wearing a brace of some sort until she is as least 15/16 and possibly longer.

My older dd was 11 when she got her twin blocks for her overbite, they were amazing and within 8 months she had her tracks fitted.

I know she is young and I'm prob annoyed not just about her brace but about how forgetful/dizzy and possibly lazy she is all the time, she is honestly a nightmare, dumps anything where ever, make s drink leaves squash on side with lid of instead of just popping back into the cupboard she is stood at Hmm

Today I found some of her toys in my room popped them trough the door of her room and told her to put away, half hour later I went to change her little sisters bed ( the bottom bunk) and found those toys shovered under the quilt at the bottom of the bed Shock seriously it must of took her longer to do that and put the teddies back than it would of to walk 3 paces and pop in the toy box!

If the way she is using it now means treatment will be prolonged coukd there be an option to defer it a year or two and get her to use it properly.

Eating with a retainer is gross. It gets coated and stinks. I can see why she takes it out - I used to, as it was embarrassing rinsing it in a public toilet (school) and unhygienic.

Have rewards for remembering, that'll help. Tell her she will have to help with costs if she loses it.

Report
lightswitchedoff · 21/12/2016 22:48

I have never had a brace of any sort so only going by what the orthodontist said with regards to eating!

Maybe I should speak to orthodontist and see if we can just maybe start with nighttime and build up as she gets older even if it means treatment will take longer

OMG light.....you are me! I feel your pain!
DD is now 13 and has had braces for nearly two years. She should have fixed train track braces now but still has the removable one's because SHE CAN'T KEEP THE FUCKING THINGS IN HER MOUTH!!! She drives me and her dad up the fucking wall! I must ask her 10000 times a day where her braces are/why aren't they in her mouth/why can't she just keep them in her mouth??? She's broken them 3 times and lost one set by leaving them on a table in subway and they got binned and we had to pay for new ones....£140. Even on holiday she wrapped them in a tissue and left them on the restaurant table....she has to take them out to eat....the waitress ended up rooting through the bin for them. The top brace is to straighten her teeth and every 8 weeks she goes to the orthodontist. The dentist expects them to move by 2mm in 8 weeks. We went in november and they hadn't moved at all.The dentist wasn't happy (dd has pissed her off a few times due to her laid back attitude) and nor was I.She got a bollocking from both of us.Apparently she's almost too old to have these braces and they'll just stop working if she doesn't get her arse into gear and keep the damn things in so she can have the fixed one's!
They are the bane of my life!

And despite having a million brace cases, tissue/kitchen roll or baby wipes seem the preferred receptacle.
My DD's braces have big lumps of plastic near the back so she can't shut her mouth properly so has to take them out to eat, then forgets to put them back in again.

I'm tempted to coat them in superglue.....
