Wearing mother-daughter Xmas dresses to the school disco

I have name changed for this because I think I'm about to get flamed! Xmas Blush

Bought mother daughter Xmas dresses to wear in the privacy of our home on Xmas day.

Dd who is six said she wanted to wear hers to the disco. I said fine. This morning she alluded to us matching and when I checked, she had assumed I would be wearing mine to! She now won't wear it if I don't (but isn't being stroppy, just happy to choose something else if I'm not game).

This makes me uncomfortable, but I'm working on getting out of my comfort zone to build confidence so I am potentially up to the challenge.

Reasons to refuse:

  • embarrass myself or her
  • draw too much attention to ourselves
  • look like a dick (see point one)

Reasons to agree:
  • she may very soon find this idea repulsive and I think I might want to have this experience
  • it's Christmas
  • confidence building/leaving comfort zone

WIBU to agree/WIBU to refuse?

Help me mumsnet! (And be kind!)

Awww, that's really sweet. I understand your reluctance though! Can you link to the dresses and we'll reassure you?

Ywbu to refuse - it's a funny talking point and will be good to leave your comfort zone!

Aw I would definitely do this, she will love it!

I really wouldn't

Whilst she might be happy now, in a few years time it will be a source of embarrassment

"Hey! Remember when LittleMatching came with the same dress as her mum? How stupid was that?!"

Big smiles, everyone will think it's cute. She'll be proud of her mummy!

I realise the Aibu about the dresses is ambiguous but I guess it would be totally unreasonable to not sure what I'm talking about! Xmas Grin

I presume it's a Christmas disco? I would just wear it and laugh about it! Who cares what people think (this is from someone who walks round in muddy johdpurs and "eclectic" colour combo's though).

Anyone who says such a thing would be a complete bitch. You don't have to worry about what joyless arseholes think of you OP.

Umm..... I think it's a bit hideous, TBH - sorry! But then I'd think it was hideous even for just at home so I don't think we are on the same wavelength about this. Is the school disco just for her age group, or the whole of primary? If it's the whole school then definitely not as they will absolutely take the piss out of her.

Oh it looks fab - do it!

Soubriquet · 19/12/2016 12:24

Yeah I think that's an awful dress for public...good for home, not so much for public

Go for it. Think you'd regret if you didn't.

That absolutely would not be the case at our primary.

I'd wear it, and if I saw someone else doing so i'd think it was sweet, I definitely wouldn't mock them or whatever. It'll be obvious you're doing it for your daughter.

Enjoy your party!

Background: it's a fairly lovely village school. Our children get to stay children for much longer I think, compared to some of what I read on mumsnet. Going to check back beforehand and make my decision based on majority I think!

It's a novelty item of clothing for a fun occasion, do it and have a laugh.

I bought DS a lovely fleecy hoody. I really liked it, and ended up buying it in age 13-14 for me. I try not to wear it at the same time though!

I have to say vanity would get the better of me and Id struggle with wearing that at home never mind in public, but as you bought them you must have thought they were nice.

To be honest, I'd probably wear it as it's basically been started now , I once went out in a bead necklace and bangle my daughter made me, both were absolutely huge, very colourful and the beads the size of large marbles, but she really wanted me to wear it, so I sucked it up and spent a week with them on 😂
