AIBU?

Poop and tele.

Apropos very little;

I feel irrationally irritated with people who say "poop" or "pooh" when they mean "poo".

Also, people who shorten "television" to "tele" (which sounds like "teleeh" in my head).

AIBU?

Of course I am. Anybody else have similar bugbears?

What's your stance on 'TV'?

I'm okay with TV. Is that controversial? Smile

What's the difference in pronounciation between poo and pooh?

I hate people calling me an Aussie, or shortening Australia to Oz.

Tele looks wrong to me, it should be telly

Aren't poo and pooh pronounced the same? Or have I been saying Pooh Bear wrong all these years?!

Yes, yes, yes.

Also, vege instead of veggie.

I agree with you. I'm not sure why it bothers me so much but it does - especially "poop", why put an unnecessary p on the end?!

I'm not really into poop but I prefer telly (tell-eee) to TV, don't know why. Is the sound of them you don't like?

People using "lappy" instead of laptop makes me twitch

Pah. I'm feeling reckless.

There is a small mountain of pooh with a small side order of tele here, but bollocks to it.

I threw away my toilet brush etc but there's a line.

It's 'The Telly' and it's switched on with 'The Zoomie'.

There isn't one it's a spelling difference ConfusedGrin

I just don't like the idea of the lovely bear being contaminated with the thought of shit maybe?

Then again "telly" looks fine to me but "tele" makes me snarl.

I don't know really. Reading chatty, colloquial kind of English, you get the worst of both the spelling irritations and also the pronunciations you can hear in your head.

Poop is just too cutesy and upbeat sounding for example.

I hate it when people use the word "say" when they mean "write" or "type".

Fuckin' grinds my gears, that does!

Wink

If my mother wants to shorten refrigerator, she puts "frig".

No one has ever suggested to her that this has a very different meaning.

I agree it's telly. Don't mind poop, but pooh is annoying. Shit is poo. Pooh is a word of airy dismal.

I know you are talking about spellings but my Mum pronounces margarine with a hard 'g'.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 17/12/2016 08:45

Yep, I agree. It's telly, not tele (I pronounce this as telay in my head) and poo not pooh. Pooh just looks fussy somehow, like you are trying to be coy.

I agree with Bill. There should be no h in poo if it's used to mean shit.
Poop is an Americanism I think.
