Poop and tele.

Apropos very little;

I feel irrationally irritated with people who say "poop" or "pooh" when they mean "poo".

Also, people who shorten "television" to "tele" (which sounds like "teleeh" in my head).

AIBU?

Of course I am. Anybody else have similar bugbears?

What's your stance on 'TV'?

Manumission Sat 17-Dec-16 08:10:19

I'm okay with TV. Is that controversial? smile

I don't know. It may be. Since I joined mumsnet my eyes have been opened to many things!

HardcoreLadyType Sat 17-Dec-16 08:13:14

What's the difference in pronounciation between poo and pooh?

I hate people calling me an Aussie, or shortening Australia to Oz.

Tele looks wrong to me, it should be telly

PocketFluff Sat 17-Dec-16 08:14:02

Aren't poo and pooh pronounced the same? Or have I been saying Pooh Bear wrong all these years?!

FunkinEll Sat 17-Dec-16 08:14:17

Yes, yes, yes.

Also, vege instead of veggie.

MrsBungle Sat 17-Dec-16 08:14:20

I agree with you. I'm not sure why it bothers me so much but it does - especially "poop", why put an unnecessary p on the end?!

isupposeitsverynice Sat 17-Dec-16 08:14:27

I'm not really into poop but I prefer telly (tell-eee) to TV, don't know why. Is the sound of them you don't like?

00100001 Sat 17-Dec-16 08:15:17

People using "lappy" instead of laptop makes me twitch

Manumission Sat 17-Dec-16 08:15:34

Pah. I'm feeling reckless.

There is a small mountain of pooh with a small side order of tele here, but bollocks to it.

I threw away my toilet brush etc but there's a line.

tiej Sat 17-Dec-16 08:16:52

It's 'The Telly' and it's switched on with 'The Zoomie'.

There isn't one it's a spelling difference confusedgrin

I just don't like the idea of the lovely bear being contaminated with the thought of shit maybe?

Then again "telly" looks fine to me but "tele" makes me snarl.

I don't know really. Reading chatty, colloquial kind of English, you get the worst of both the spelling irritations and also the pronunciations you can hear in your head.

Poop is just too cutesy and upbeat sounding for example.

HardcoreLadyType Sat 17-Dec-16 08:21:15

I hate it when people use the word "say" when they mean "write" or "type".

Fuckin' grinds my gears, that does!

wink

Manumission Sat 17-Dec-16 08:22:26

Who can you mean when you say that hardcore ?

grin

HardcoreLadyType Sat 17-Dec-16 08:23:21

If my mother wants to shorten refrigerator, she puts "frig".

No one has ever suggested to her that this has a very different meaning.

Manumission Sat 17-Dec-16 08:26:08

shock Oh that one's quite bad. Or impressive. I'm not sure smile

BillSykesDog Sat 17-Dec-16 08:26:35

I agree it's telly. Don't mind poop, but pooh is annoying. Shit is poo. Pooh is a word of airy dismal.

Manumission Sat 17-Dec-16 08:39:45

I always knew you had your head screwed in bill grin

EllaHen Sat 17-Dec-16 08:44:06

I know you are talking about spellings but my Mum pronounces margarine with a hard 'g'.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser Sat 17-Dec-16 08:45:03

Yep, I agree. It's telly, not tele (I pronounce this as telay in my head) and poo not pooh. Pooh just looks fussy somehow, like you are trying to be coy.

honeylulu Sat 17-Dec-16 08:45:31

I agree with Bill. There should be no h in poo if it's used to mean shit.
Poop is an Americanism I think.

tiej Sat 17-Dec-16 08:52:21

My elderly teacher, used to call it 'the refridge'.
