My name is Alexandra. (I'm happy to say that here as I don't post personal stuff). Not Alex. I sign my emails Alexandra. I introduce myself as Alexandra.

so why t' feck am I always called Alex? In response to emails I have clearly signed with my legal, preferred name??! why do people shorten without asking?! I wouldn't, it's rude.

I hate the shortened version of my name and like you I always tell people my proper name, but there they go without rhyme or reason shortening it this horrible sound.

I wince ever time, but tbh I've pretty much given up now. I feel uncomfortable if I correct them so just let them get on with it.

I have been asked by a few people which I prefer, which makes no sense either, I've just told you my name, why would I tell you my name's Gertrude if I want you to call me Gertie - not my name btw.

I use my Sunday name for work. People always try to shorten it. I politely say 'Actually it's x'. It irritates me. If I wanted to be a shortened version (I am outside of work) I would introduce myself as much! It's practical as well, my work email is firstname.surname@business. If you search for a nickname you can't find it! I have worked hard to ensure my colleagues call me by my full name and anyone who tries to shorten it gets told no! So no, YANBU. They are.

I gave a presentation to a couple of hundred people. The introducer introduced me as Alex. FFS.

I always correct politely. Hate it though. Worst is when I've used Alexandra repeatedly yet they still call me Alex. Makes me want to call them some ridiculously shortened version.

YANBU. People shouldn't shorten names withiut knowing that it's okay. This is why parents have to make sure they love the shortened versions of their DC's names...

YANBU. My name is Lesley and without fail it gets shortened to Les. I bloody hate it but have resigned myself to it.

It's mainly to do with the region I live in. Every name gets shortened e.g. Terry would be 'Teh'.

Because 99% of the population aren't precious about their name, when it is a long name. It is FAR more common to shorten a long name like that, than use the full one.

Of course , if introducing a speaker then I would check first.

My name's one of these. I only use the short version for close friends and family, my long name is for being posh and profesh at work. The two names have different connotations and sounds different and signal different things to me. Yanbu.

I think it's rude to shorten someone's name before you have known them for a good while and you are pretty sure they won't mind or actively prefer it.

I have the opposite problem. I prefer the shortened version of my name, and always sign emails with it. People often reply using the longer version and it irritates me. YANBU
