Out of date food Tesco!

I nipped to Tesco on the way to my night shift, bought a chicken Caesar salad, just sat down to eat it and noticed it went out of date yesterday! angry

Aibu to think this is really bad! Its not even just a day out of date, in half an hour it will be 2 days out of date!

Isn't it like a deadly sin for shops to have out of date food still on shelves? It's not even a best before it's a proper used by!

I have the receipt, what's the best way to complain?

It's only fair that I get at least the cost of a pizza rthat I'm going to have to buy now reimbursed! grin

Is it a

Use by

Or best before date?

If it's use by, it's actually illegal to sell it.

PenguinsandPebbles Mon 28-Nov-16 23:42:51

Well an offence maybe illegal is too harsh a word

ilovesooty Mon 28-Nov-16 23:43:12

The OP said it was "use by".

Champagneformyrealfriends Mon 28-Nov-16 23:44:55

I've had this in tesco a few times-mainly in the smaller "express" stores. Their stock rotation is shit.

Champagneformyrealfriends Mon 28-Nov-16 23:45:45

Oh sorry-missed the point of the op! Email them via the website.

ohmygodyouguys Mon 28-Nov-16 23:45:54

Speak to the customer service desk in store. They'll sort out a refund. Take the packaging too.

lostgirl77 Mon 28-Nov-16 23:46:01

Definitely used by! I have the receipt somewhere I think I chucked it in the foot well when I got in my car! blush

Waanderlust Mon 28-Nov-16 23:50:53

There's an Asda near me that was selling meat nearly 5 months out of date ... now that's grim envy

bibbitybobbityyhat Mon 28-Nov-16 23:55:29

People make mistakes. Take it back for a refund. Not a biggie.

PenguinsandPebbles Tue 29-Nov-16 00:01:17

The OP said it was "use by".

That's told me then.

OP, I would email, send the photo to them explain the story as you have here and hopefully you will get a good outcome. When I last complained to customer services at Tesco they were great. I had a refund and a voucher sent to me for £10. On my last two online shops I've had gifts smile last week I had a big bar of chocolate and this week gifts for the cat.

Tesco will refund you and probably give you a small goodwill gesture if you take the item, packaging and receipt in to their customer services. It is up to you if you are satisfied with that resolution. I would be as mistakes happen, but have seen in the past people be really outraged about things like this and threaten to report them.

No biggy?! I've got another 10 hours lift at work and only a measly reeses cup to keep me fed now thanks to them! It'll be a miracle if I make it through! smile

Did Asda get done for their 5 month out of date stuff, in all seriousness that is a big deal!

Maybe I could report it to the fail and get my picture in the paper looking sad while pointing at the salad grin

I bought some blueberry muffins from Tesco about 2 months back. Dated for the 25th, i bought it on the 27th! I'm mostly housebound so no job etc to keep me on track of what date it is. Became apparent when i bit in to one and it was completely stale. Checked the date on my laptop and realised they were 2 days out of date. My dad took them back with the receipt and they refunded and replaced for free (bear in mind was only a £1 pack of muffins).
They will definitely refund, might offer to replace it free with an in date item the same, but they definitely won't reimburse you for anything you buy elsewhere as a replacement lunch.

HappytoLurk Tue 29-Nov-16 00:09:11

Def email them with a photo. I did when I had an issue and they couldn't have been more helpful. Was prepared for a fight too!! grin

BratFarrarsPony Tue 29-Nov-16 00:13:00

" Not a biggie. "
yes I can assure you that this is a 'biggie' that is why there is a date system, silly.

PenguinsandPebbles Tue 29-Nov-16 00:13:01

Get ready to practise the sad face OP smile

There really helpful if you email smile

Jemimapuddingduck Tue 29-Nov-16 00:14:34

I've had this with a sandwich at tesco but I'd bitten into it before I realised confused

I took it back and they refunded me after I refused a replacement which funnily I didn't really feel like eating at that point envy

Tweet them with a Daily mail sad face you might get free stuff grin

PenguinsandPebbles Tue 29-Nov-16 00:15:06

And agree it potentially is a biggie

I had a ready meal which I didn't realise was past it's use by date once, the aftermath was not a happy one.

Was only when I retrieved the packaging from the bin I realised and it was only a day.

PacificDogwod Tue 29-Nov-16 00:16:57

Send your photo to Tesco - website allows for feedback (or tweet them if you want to get an instant reaction).
They will refund your money (and you might get an additional voucher for some money off).
You will have to find another way to feed yourself thought just now, sorry.

UterusUterusGhali Tue 29-Nov-16 00:17:19

Reminds me of this internet gem!

PacificDogwod Tue 29-Nov-16 00:18:26

Uterus grin

Having said what I said, I'd probably eat it anyway <cast iron constitution>

PenguinsandPebbles Tue 29-Nov-16 00:21:42

I envy you pacific

PacificDogwod Tue 29-Nov-16 00:25:54

Penguins, I suspect I'll get my comeuppance at some point, but it is weird: I can eat almost anything (within reason: if it's furry or crawls off the plate under its now steam, I'll desist...) whereas DH who is much more careful that I am has an upset stomach v easily.
I otoh get colds... all the blood time hmm

lostgirl77 Tue 29-Nov-16 00:27:14

I was tempted to just eat it but I don't think I would enjoy it knowing the potential ramifications!

I'll email them tomorrow as I'm too much of a wuss to see an actual person, I'll probably end up apologising to them! blush

Everyone's missing the bigger picture here though, which is quite honestly, devastating, I have NO TEA!! sad
