AIBU?

Smelly Candles and Smugness

I'm currently Christmas window shopping in nice places, with nice stuff. Everywhere I turn is a £££ candle. Bloody piles of the things in every shop, everywhere. Retailers must be preparing for a seriously chi-chi powercut. Or maybe a power-outtage combined with a sewage workers strike.

But who are the people who can literally set fire to £200 for a bit of a nice pong about the place?

AIBU to be so jealous confused?

Have to admit I have a couple of those £200 jobbies Blush
Although I have had them for nearly 18months now and they are still going strong. The fragrance is soooo strong and the candle literally only needs to be lit for an hour and fills the whole house- amazing.
Maybe IABU heh

I knew as soon as I saw your link OP it would be the diptyque candle.

This one in particular has been featured heavily on YouTube and social media. I agree £200 is eye wateringly expensive for what is in effect burning your money away. I am a sucker for a Yankee Candle though!

£200 for a candle? Errrrrrm nope not me! Where are these? That's such a waste of money IMO

I don't get the candle craze TBH what really narks me are the ones in pretty shapes (wax not pot) you can't ever burn them if you like the shape! And why would you want a melting elephant on your coffee table?

The posh ones always smell of vanilla or lavender too :( my two worst smells and people always buy them for me in candles!!

Queen ah see now my opinion may have changed slightly reading your post, if they last forever then maybe not so much of a waste of money of you are into candles - I take that part of my comment back!

I love a good candle but £20 is my absolute limit. I used to buy Jo Malone but can't afford since I had dd.

I don't know about £200 but you get more for your money with more expensive candles, stronger scents, better wax, burns slower and lasts longer. Dh and I don't discuss how much I spend on candles or how much he spends on trainers and we rock on just fine 😬

I do love a Diptyque candle. Luckily so do MIL and SIL, who tend to buy them for me for Christmas! £200 is absurd though.

I once gave my views on stinking fire hazards upmarket candles - on a thread. It did not go well; people are fucking psycho about those fetid lumps of fragranced wax.

FYI everyone: They've invented electric light now!

The people with those candles are going to be the people who least need those candles.

There's no way they are covering up the smell of sports kit...

Yes rosegold they really do last a long time, and because of their big size they give out an impressive smell even when they're not lit.
DH sometimes lights one when I'm not home though and I tell him off, its such a waste if my nostrils don't experience it!!

I'm into wonky melts, very much cheaper, and they sayyyy they are all healthy and organic-y! Try them, the scents are just amazing

haha I dunno OP, DH is a pro-sportsman so plenty of sports kits in our house (and a smelly long haired dog)

I am in a candle club called 'the melt crowd' with Flamingo Candles- a family business in wales. I get a box of wax melts delivered every month and they are so nice! Their customer service is fab- would really recommend for a nice Christmas present. Only £10 a month subscription.

Although maybe you could convince him that he has used too much so simply must get you a new one for Christmas....Wink

I will have to confess that I am an expensive candle lover. But like someone upthread, I am careful with them.

I can make a 4 wick Jo Malone candle last a year. And yes, just burning for an hour makes the most amazing scent that you can still smell a day later.

And there was me thinking I looked minted paying 20 quid for a Yankee candle like it was a drop in the ocean ( while crying inside )

Better candles do actually smell really really nice though and keep there smell too

Bertucci, if you are choosing your smell for the year, which scent do you go for?

I love my diptyque feu de Bois. Although the muji log fire one is almost as good and about 10% of the cost Smile

AddToBasket I love Lime, Basil and Mandarin.

I was recently bought Wild Fig and Cassis and it's lovely.

I also love Cassis from the White Company - and that's less than £20!
