To think ive spoilt myself with Dulux paint?

When we moved into our house we quickly painted the rooms. Over the last year we have been going back through them and making them nice.

Wilkos paint did the job, good range of colours, good price, noce enough finish.

Then I painted the master bedroom in Dulux Goose Down. It was fucking amazing - one coat, looks lush, dried quick and I stroke the walls when I walk in there.

Just gone to do one of the living room walls today with Wilkos "finest" and Im so cross. Claggy and uneven, dries transparent and has took me twice as long to do one wall than it did in the other room.

I should never have made the swap!

Its only white too; would I be mad to drive out this instant and buy some proper paint?

It's true, you can't go back to own brand.

what ever you do don't try Farrow & Ball then. We have no option but to use it every time we paint Shock

Hi. Out if interest, what finish is the dulux? Matt? Endurance? Once? Would be good to know before I start decorating. Thanks.

Farrow and Ball isn't any better than Dulux in my opinion (and that of the various commercial decorators I've used on projects over the years) - although the standard colours are more varied. With Dulux you can literally match to any colour, although it has to be a mix.

We stopped using the cheaper paints some time ago, and the finish isn't as good, so it doesn't actually save money.

Although it's decent quality, I've always thought Dulux was pretty standard as paint goes and I've never found one coat enough of any of their paints, even the ones that are supposed to be one coat paints.

Although, having said that I've never used Wilco's paints so maybe I'm judging Dulux harshly.

I tried Farrow and Ball funny and thought it was rubbish. The colours are gorgeous but the consistency was horrible and took four coats to get it opaque.

Dulux paint is great. I really like the valspar premium matt emulsion too-they colour matched some Farrow and ball for us and it's really nice to use.

Farrow and Ball is the best imo, particularly the eggshell variety. Try that once and your bank manager will be having fits though!

Also a lover of Leyland.

Ill swerve F&B then dont think my purse could take it.

It was just Matt, to the poster who asked. Though im contemplating the Endurance for the living/diner. Is that any good?

Dulux is only a standard paint. Quality isn't great anymore sadly, older decorators will tell you it's 'not what it used to be'

Agree f&b is a nightmare to work with

But goose down is a new colour and v popular and always sold out

Dulux paint is THE best. I love it. Have decorated 3 houses top to bottom over the last few years and I really do think nothing compares to the finish and texture.

The worst paint I've used is b and q own brand. I used it for a bathroom and it was almost like jelly in consistency. Dreadful stuff.

Love Dulux. F&B colours are beautiful but the coverage is dreadful. The decorators i've used won't paint with it. It can take 4-6 coats to get even coverage.

Farrow and ball are beautiful but a DISASTER with kids.
Try colourtrend ceremic paint....colours are so deep and coverage is better than dulux.
Plus you can wipe down the ceremic finish...I covered farrow and ball ding room red (almost burgandy) with colourtrend. Once coat and I couldn't see the red..Did two coats for perfection but it was perfection

Wait until you paint all the external paint work in Farrow and Ball and then they discontinue that colour so you have to have it specially mixed at a special price.!

Endurance is worth the extra money, I have used it in the hallway and it wipes clean but has a Matt finish.

I painted a whole house in Dulux - it was rubbish even the endurance range wasn't durable.
Used Wickes own paint - its very good and cheaper.

FWIW I think all paint gets made in the same factory!!

Little Green paint is super lush and fucking expensive. But sooooo worth it! As is Sanderson paint. Delicious.

Farrow and Ball are my favourite because of the earthy colours and no smell. I always feel like the colours work with each other so well, that the whole house ties together. The price though Shock I actually returned a small tin to them recently, they're just round the corner. They looked me up under my postcode etc. And were casually scrolling through all of my purchases within the last year since we moved into a big fixer-upper.... nearly £700 on paint!!! We have bought a lot, and we've done woodwork in varying colours depending on the walls, so that bumped up the price, but the total did shock me. That being said, everyone that walks in says they love the house and love the colours, and we do too. I was shocked at what it added up to, but I feel like it was worth it for everything to feel like it's been well thought out and put together. The advice from the staff in the f&b shop is always excellent!

Back in the 80s dp came back with a huge vat of Homebase magnolia. He thought it was such good value.
It was like painting with milk. Complete waste of time and money. Always use dulux now although I have heard good reports of the B&Q mix your own stuff.

Tried F&B last year. Never again. It reminded me of the Homebase paint from 1982. 6 coats and I am still seeing patches. Apparently if you want the F&B finish my builder said I needed to go and match the colour to,for example the B&Q mix your own then paint the walla with the cheaper paint then only use F&B for the final coat although I don't think I could trust it again.

I would always use dulux paint . It really is fab. You know what they say about buying cheap. My mum will happily buy supermarket own brand paint but will need about 5 coats as it's like water

It's like the difference between single cream and extra thick cream

My (now deceased) neighbour was a professional painter and decorator. He always used Crown paint but I think I recall him saying that Johnstone's was good too. It's one of those brands that tends to turn up in smaller DIY and hardware shops as well as professional decorator's merchants.

We use little greene. Our decorator doesn't like farrow and ball to work with. He loves little greene though. Am trying some dulux in the toilet.

NapQueen, do you mean the Dulux Endurance matt emulsion? I painted my house throughout with it 3 years ago, and apart from the odd knock, it's stood the test of time pretty well I think. Nice even coverage, and you can scrub at it more than you could a normal emulsion.
