AIBU to think it's inappropriate/insensitive?

Why? Fireworks are for celbrating. You don't think people celebrated the Armistice? You don't think they partied in the streets on VE day?

Fireworks here too - they seem especially fitting to the day. We should celebrate the dead as well as mourn them.

But Armistice day is specifically a day of remembrance for the fallen, we don't 'celebrate' it. The purpose of VE day was different, the day everyone celebrated the end of the war so that argument makes no sense.

Do you really think the fireworks are a tribute to the dead? They are just a hangover from Halloween.

Given so many veterans struggle with fireworks because of the memories the loud bangs bring back it seems an odd way to remember!

Why wouldn't you celebrate the end of a war? You remember and honour but you can also celebrate. It was a happy day.

My grandmother remembered Armistice Day 1918. Everyone was out and happy in the streets. She'd just got a telegram to say her husband fell out of his aeroplane after dropping his glove and automatically reaching for it.

No, I'm saying that while you may think its one thing, other people are free to think differently. Or not observe Armistice Day at all. Or not even care.
I think that was the point of fighting for freedom in the first place, wasn't it?

Very good point Sirzy.

Yes, VE day was different, it was a different war for a start.

I did wonder why a massive firework went off earlier!

A different war? So what? War is war. And btw, Armistice day officially commerarates BOTH world wars.

Livingtothefull · 11/11/2016 20:05

Actually Armistice day commemorates the dead from ALL conflicts including those that are recent/ongoing….so not an occasion for celebration.

I know its a free country so people are free to be crass and thoughtless….doesn't make it OK though.

Crass and thoughtless because they have minds of their own?

WTF is wrong with people today? Are you mindless automatons?

I don't think there's a problem with the fireworks. There was a big act of remembrance this morning. I'm not sure it has ever been an all day thing before.

It's not a celebration of the end of a war though is it? It's to remember all those who lost their lives, hence the two minute silence to remember and reflect. No one is complaining about fireworks on the anniversary of VE Day Hmm

It hasn't, and it isn't. And Sunday is the official day of remembrance, has been since 1939.
It's just that some people think that everyone should think just like they do and do as they are told.

You are confused. Sunday is the official day of remembrence. Today is 98 years since the end of the first world war. It is, in fact, the equivalent of VE day. If people want to celebrate the end of the war, they can. And if they want to ignore the day altogether, they can do that too.

I highly doubt they are fireworks for the anniversary of VE Day. It will be some twat who has fireworks left over, and it happens to be Friday night.

How setting off fireworks proves you're not an automaton, I've no idea.

Fed up with my animals being bothered by pointless and sudden loud bangs now, if I'm honest. Diwali is over, and bonfire night is over. New Years and Chinese New Years are an age away yet. Those are the fucking days set aside for fireworks.

Yanbu. There was one at 350 this morning too. It's been every night since before Diwali

I agree that it's really annoying that people randomly set fireworks off but I don't think it's worse doing it this evening than yesterday or tomorrow. The two minute silence was this morning and there's a ceremony on Sunday.

A local school has fireworks on tonight. No idea why it's a week late. It does seem an odd choice of date.
