just doesn't cut it as an argument?
It's funny we live in a society where new things are lapped up...but when it comes to parenting the whole ole...but our parents did or it;s always been done like that...suddenly becomes a valid argument...just because it fits the bill...I mean...wtf...lets just ignore all the new research then right...saying that though, we might aswell scrab it all, because it wold safe money...just lets plod on wihtout knowing any better then, yeah....thumping my head agaisnt a brick wall for sure, sigh....

Agree totally.

As for "never did me any harm" - someone posted on here a while ago that "not doing harm" is hardly the benchmark they wanted to parent by. I mean it's the basic standard, but fgs, does nobody have ambition these days?!

A lot are weaning-related, Aviatrix, I would venture.

Yes, I was eating pureed roast beef and Yorks pudding at 5 days of age and it never did ME any harm

My other favourite (on similar threads) is "Yes, but it's only research."

Eh??????

rofl...I mean, it's so imple to get funding for research especially if it doesn't make money for some company!

Oh, and of course, "it's only guidelines"

Yes, and?

Report
3LoveHeartsAndNoMore · 13/02/2007 00:10

didn't ya know, those guidelines are just there to be a nuisance...not because there could possibly be a valid reason for it....like it is so easy to change guidelines....

oh i love these! This one is called...

quote
"Argumentum ad antiquitatem
This is the fallacy of asserting that something is right or good simply because it is old, or because 'that's the way it's always been.'"

Fascinating conversation happen when one can point out the fallacy in an argument (ie the Process by which its assumed to be 'vaild') rather than disagree about opinion on the Content of the argument.

Oh Lordy this drives me nuts, not just relation to parenting but anything. It's fil's favourite arguement against the way me and dh live our lives. I should iron dh's shirts because women have 'always done it', it's why I should have changed my name when we got married, why dd should have dh's name not mine etc etc

I'm with you all the way - have felt exactly like I was banging my head into a brick wall of 'well it didn't do me any harm' and 'do whatever works for you - follow your instincts' on some recent threads. It's so frustrating!

am right with you.

If we did everything because it had always been done like that we would still be wearing bustles and dying of consumption.

It annoys me too. I know someone who goes on about what a rubbish diet she had as a child etc, but it never did her any harm. Then 10 mins later she is discussing the symptoms of her IBS. And I think - are you really sure it didn't do you any harm?

Definitely not unreasonable.

Drives me WILD when DS's godmother insists that putting a baby to sleep on their back is dangerous because they could choke and die. She steadfastly refuses to acknowledge the hugely successful back to sleep campaign and how important it is in avoiding SIDS.

Ditto carseats (all of DH's family) - "in our day, we dragged em behind the car on a 6 foot rope and they survived..." arrrghhh

Ditto - you cannot have a vaginal birth after a CS. I have tried to explain but she just point blank refuses to listen, instead I get "when I had DD1 I was told that I would never be able to have a vaginal birth blah... blah... blah". I want to scream FGS woman, your DD1 is 22 years old.

I could go on and on. Tis a major bugbear

I bloody hate guidlines, they are usually made uo by some twit in an office.
Research?? Don't trust much of that either. It's usually flawed and doesn't actually give enough information to be worth the paper it's written on.

There's alot to be said for old knowledge and experience.
Some of it is misguided, but then I think you'll find that when our children have children they will be stunned at the old fashioned rubbish advice and tips on parenting we give them. Hopefully as we parent them now we assume that what we are doing to them "won't do them much harm" eh?? Otherwise we wouldn't be doing it.

Oh and my absolute personal favourite:

"In our day we put some rusks/whisky in the bottle, and the baby slept through the night from 2 days old - never did xxx any harm".
