Is this this week's story in the tabs then?

How do you suggest HQ police it?

For the nth time, you're not having a private conversation with your bezzie. You're telling the fucking internet.

You don't want it spread, don't say it in the first place.

MMHQ are not selling it to the internet.

Reporters are seeing something that has been publicly posted and reporting on it, giving due credit to the name of who put it up (as far as they can know) and the site it was put up on.

It would be POLITE of them to ask (as I've seen journalists ask to repost from Twitter) but it's not required.

The thing HQ could do is help the OP or similar take the paper to court! The control and power of the newspapers needs to be broken, and this is one key area where they act at present with no care or thought.

Posting on MN is pretty much the same as writing your thoughts anonymously on a billboard in your town.

People might repeat the story.
People will use your story as entertainment
People might recognise themselves or you in the story.

It's anonymous to a certain extend but it's not private.

Fair enough Vintage,

Still think relationship posts can cause the most harm though! yes their posting for advice in a place thats public but theres public and PUBLIC.

Why? It's a post on a public forum on the intranets. Want control over how your words are used? Don't post them.

Journalists getting stories from a site which speaks specifically to their demographic is not laziness. It's a valid news source.

You mean every newspaper should only ever publish things when they've been given express permission? Web forums are part of real, public life. Nothing is private or password protected. Why shouldn't a newspaper, or other website be allowed to publish or comment on something in the public domain? Where do you draw the line, exactly?

For heaven's sake. If you post something on a public forum you risk it becoming public in other media. I don't see what's so hard to understand.

No. They couldn't. Legally the newspapers have done nothing wrong in quoting the thread. MNHQ are not silly enough to waste money trying to go to court over it.

In an ideal world, nothing concerning a personal relationship would hit the "news"papers. However, as it is, once you put intimate details of your private life on a public forum, you are taking the risk that it might be republished elsewhere.

In some ways it's the same as celebrities giving "reveal all" interviews & then criticising the media for talking about their private lives. Only with more anonymity.

Once you have chosen to post to publish globally (by posting on an open internet site such as Mumsnet), then it's pointless to think that it cannot and wil ,not be picked up by others.

Now, I think it's pretty trashy, but it's one of the risks of choosing to post in the first place. It's not a chat amongst mates, it's open publication.

Take them to court for what exactly? Reproducing material that's already in the public domain?

Report
passingcloud · 09/11/2016 19:03

And nope - public is public is public.

Previously DM has lifted from _chat and AIBU. This lifting from Relationships is new I think.

If you put something on the Internet you may as well publish it in the Daily Mail. The Internet is public.

I do agree with you, but I don't see how it can be prevented. One would hope - in days of yore! - that journalists would have more decency, but they don't these days, and they don't care.

If it sells papers, it'll be done. It's us, we the people, who buy the damn things, so it's down to us really.

Posting on an Internet forum is the most PUBLIC you can get. If you don't want the world and it's wife reading then don't post

I'm not saying I agree with the papers picking stories up but they can do it, they are doing nothing wrong taking stories from a public forum so they do it

If you don't want it made public don't put it on a public forum especially one that is well know for having its stories picked up by the press/Matthew Wright Show.

Must we have one of these pointless threads every other day?

"there's private and private" no, there isn't. It's all public. Don't want it to appear elsewhere? Then don't publish it on the Internet.

There was one published today apparently about a DH publicly humiliating his wife in the car or sonething ( cant find it now a sMsnt pulled it and cant see anything fits the bill on DM site) but it strikes me how much it could put the woman in danger if knobhead 'D'h recognises himself

Why are people exasperated that there's a thread on a topic they've already discussed? Clearly some people haven't and want to have a say. Let them.

I think it's vile that people coming to discuss embarrassing or troubling problems that they can't discuss with people in real life are being spread in national newspapers or on TV. It's a terrible shame that Mumsnet can't feel like a safe place for individuals who may feel vulnerable and/or alone.

If I was a journalist I'd have the respect to ask a person whether they would mind their story shared.
