AIBU?

To mention the constant wrong spelling of my teen Dds name or am I just being petty?

My dd is a teen at secondary school. A few weeks ago one of her classes put on a show and it was to encourage the pupils to be as professional as possible, everything was to be perfect etc. On the programme dd's name was spelled incorrectly. Her name has 3 letters and is a standard spelling.

Parents were given feedback forms. I gave really good positive feedback but did mention that dd's name was wrong in the programme.

Next day in class the teacher said to all the pupils that it was nice that everyone's parents gave positive feedback except dd's.

3 times since this the teacher has spelled Dd's name wrong and when dd has mentioned it the teacher has said "oh I wouldn't want your mum to pull me up again" Hmm

Teacher seems to be obviously displeased with my feedback. Dd has said it's getting really annoying and she feels it's being done on purpose now.

So parent's night this week, would it be petty to mention it again or let it go and just let dd constantly correct her and get snide comments?

Let it go, I'd be more concerned if teacher didn't know who she was.

Id mention it and ask why she was snide instead of if dealing with it like a professional.

How unprofessional of the teacher! I'd raise it with her - not so much the initial spelling error, but her inability to take constructive criticism and singling your DD out in class.

What's the point of feedback forms if you can't take the feedback?

I also wonder if one of her seniors saw the feedback and pulled her up on it

My DDs name was wrongly spelled in every concert programme and newsletter all the way through High school, despite her being one of the regular soloists. At her final sports awards ceremony, the school spelled not only her name wrongly, but also her sport! It was just funny after a couple of years and I gave up correcting them. It was spelled properly on her exam results certificates.

Annoying! Absolutely no need to raise your feedback to class. Besides she should have taken it on board! Guessing Amy? 😉

The spelling itself (annoying) I could get over. However I would want to know why the teacher is making repeated snide remarks to deliberately make your DD uncomfortable in relation to feedback that was requested!!

She has taught her for 4 year so I would like to think that she would know who she was! Was always able to spell her name until 3 weeks ago too! Wink

I think I will have to mention it as it is bothering me that Dd is getting hassle over something that I have done. The first 2 times she brushed it off but I think it's bothering her a bit now.

Yes or Ami as she is now known.

I'd be livid if someone was being rude to my child because of something I'd said. If the teacher has a problem with your feedback she should take it up with you, not take it out on your DD. I wouldn't be able to resist mentioning it at parents night.

If she didn't have a habit of spelling your DD's name wrong before this happened I'd be pretty cynical about the co-incidence tbh. Totally unprofessional.

Now you know how everyone with a non-English name feels. Let it go.

Unprofessional and sloppy of the teacher. I write for a living and I'd get my arse handed to me on a plate of I went to print with someone's name misspelled.
It is important, and if the point of the exercise was to be professional, they should teach the basics. In this case they haven't.

Lala I think that is what's bothering me the most. The teacher clearly has an issue with me but taking it out on dd.

Not sure it's the same as having a non English name, if it was just the misspelling I would let it go, I've had 40 years of my own name being spelled wrong and I've learned to live with it. It's the comments that have gone with it, really.

I would definitely mention it. That's such unprofessional behaviour and quite unkind too.

Ami

That is not a standard spelling of the name- were you being sarcastic? is she called Amy or Ami?

The teacher is being petty, not you. And she definitely shouldn't be mentioning it to the rest of the class or your dd. I hope she doesn't carry the grudge into over things like assessments or marking.

God, the teacher sounds like an unprofessional, spoiled, PA bitch. She should not be taking it out on your dd. I'd have a word. With her HoD, preferably.

I'd be annoyed, I've had my name spelled wrong all my life and it's really irritating!
It's really important to get things right, the teacher should be taking care with it and definitely not calling her out in class about your feedback!

DD is Amy teacher is spelling it Ami.

I will definitely mention it then, I wasn't sure if I was being irrational or petty, so nice to have other views. We have discussed just going in and calling the teacher a random name but have agreed that would be petty! Grin

perditalost I took this to mean that the teacher has misspelled it this way, I think the OP's daughter is Amy.

perdita - I think she meant that her daughter is Amy, but since her teacher has started misspelling it, her name is now Ami.

Look we have 4 different spellings of Chardonnay in 1 year group - it isn't easy!

If you had corrected the teacher and she had inadvertently continued to use the incorrect spelling, I'd probably let it go. But the passive aggressive comments are not appropriate. They're rude and kind of nasty.
