To ask for you to talk to me about exercise

I am fat.

I was A Nice Size until Dc1 then put on weight and thought I was huuuuuuge.

I lost it. Then it slowly went on after DC2. By the time I had DC3 I was pretty fat. Now I'm really, properly fat.

I've committed to lose it (long story which I won't go into but I've just been told off by my own child Hmm) but I'm wondering about exercise.

The problems are, firstly I am big enough for exercise to hurt a bit. I don't mean normal aches and pains but actually 'shit, ow, I can't move.'

I hate swimming. Don't mind the sea or lakes or rivers but bobbing up and down in a pool is not for me. And you get wet. And cold. And hungry.

I can't run, I really can't. Even when I was quite young and healthy and energetic I couldn't run.

So, any ideas people? Not Zumba or aerobics ... I'm as coordinated as a seal on ice and as flexible as a paving slab so yoga/Pilates are out.

Walking? It's the best way to start if you haven't done much before. Walk at a brisk pace, arms up and moving.

There was a larger woman that started at our boot camp class. Doing the class at her own level, surrounded by others has really helped her & looking at her, I'd say she's lost at least 5 stone. Control how you fuel your body X calories you burn off through sweating & you'll get there. Good luck

You do understand though that if you are uncoordinated, fat and negative join my club nothing is really going to immediately be awesome. You have to work at it.

Speaking as someone who three months ago was red-faced and wheezing after running 2 minutes and can now run for 40 minutes.

Trust me, I can't, running is a no-go. Even dh gave up with me on running. But anyway let's not make the thread about that.

Ten years ago I was size 19. I cycled everywhere, went to the gym, skied, did loads. I still could not run. I just can't.

I do a fair bit of walking (have a dog) but doesn't make much difference. I'm hoping to find something that will get me sociable. I wish I could dance or something like that.

Weight loss is 80/20 food/ exercise so unless you take up ultra marathons don't expect to loss much weight. Of course it's still good for you in a million ways. Walk. Walk briskly and purposefully and increase gradually.

Your post does come across as very negative, though. Fat people find ways to exercise. Aquarobics is extremely popular at my gym especially with bigger women. Pilates doesn't involve much bendiness. The trick is finding something you actually enjoy and can commit to. Would someone walk with you? Or use the time to listen to podcasts?

Good luck.

Not sure how old your kids are but I get my exercise in via the bike. Cycle an hour to work each way, a few times a week (public transport others), cycle to school and nursery via bike with the kids in a dutch style bike (them at front). I've been amazed how quickly it's normal

Crossfit. People of all sizes and abilities, everything can be scaled, everyone is lovely, and it's a great community. It's not just for the Uber fit.

Lifting weights is the best way to get your metabolism firing.

Circuits or HIIT classes.
Bodypump classes.

Group ex is more motivating that working out on your own.

Agree. Plenty of larger ladies find that lifting weights kick starts your metabolism. V few lycra loverly skinny chicks in the free weights area if that'd put you off

Its going to be the food that does the weightloss, but exercise is about feeling good!

Walking is the thing for me, especially when the mornings are fresh and crisp. Make it a habit, do it everyday.

You can do anything you like, barn dancing, cycling, rowing - but its the things you take pleasure in and you do not have to be good at it.

What do you like?

Do not use exercise as another stick to beat yourself with, what do you do for fun?

Another walking advocate here.

But.....don't be precious with it. Strolling with your dog is not going to cut it. While lovely and relaxing and wonderful for the mood, it's not going to change your life.

What you need to find is an uphill woodland track, or at least a good half a mile uphill and walk like a woman possessed. 'Power walking' is amazing. No special training required (probably not officially 'power walking') but just walk as fast as you can without breaking into a run. While running is amazing exercise, when overweight it's not great for your knees. For the sake of your heart and lungs, you want to do something for half an hour, a few times a week that makes you sweaty and out of breath. You will start to find this easier and you can build on it.

It sounds awful, but it feels great. Honestly. Some great tunes will also help Grin

Go to your local parkrun and just because it's called parkrun doesn't mean you have to run it, brisk walk it Smile everyone is friendly and it's very inclusive.

And another vote for body pump, it's tough but cardio benefits too, you will see your body transform before your eyes.

Cycling is good as it is non impact, and you can do it fairly gently at first before upping the intensity. You say you used to cycle everywhere - why not start that up again. Cycle to the shops. Pop out for an hour and ride round the country lanes. I don't know if you work, but try commuting by bike if you do
